And by this year the number of stores had increased to over 2,400? The scrapbooking fever has caught on in the United States, and young entrepreneurs of all genders are cashing in! is a creative and innovative way to get your students excited about entrepreneurship. Students want to be involved in this fast-growing and creative industry. American Fork High School has their students involved in running a scrapbooking business. Students learn fundamentals in scrapbooking (including design, layout, and electronic applications) and then incorporate these skills into running a small business related to the scrapbooking industry. Their students have created and marketed a scrapbooking product that has put American Fork on the map. The instructors have successfully combined three ATE (Applied Technology Education) curricula: Family and Consumer Sciences, Business, and Social Studies.

Opinion Request No. 92-31 Dear Superintendent Bean: This letter is in response to your inquiry of September 30, 1992, regarding the propriety of a school entering into an agreement to use Channel One in the schools. Your precise questions are: May a school district enter into a contract for the use of Channel One in the schools, and if so, must provisions be made to excuse students who do not wish to view the commercial messages? Yes, a district may enter into a contract for use of Channel One if the contract is duly approved by the local board of education, and students who do not wish to view the commercial messages should be excused and directed to alternative school activities. Before discussing the questions from a legal perspective, some background information will be helpful.

School Information - Utah University Campus
University of Phoenix has been providing educational opportunities to the working adult population for over 25 years. The University’s original model was founded to address several key problems regarding the availability and applicability of traditional teaching and service methods with respect to the working adult student. The result was a unique learning experience that allowed working adult students to develop both affective and cognitive skills through intense and concentrated courses. These courses met in physical locations during the evening and weekend hours.
This innovation created an opportunity at a scale previously unknown in higher education - the opportunity for the working adult student to more easily return to a collegiate environment to further their educational skills. From its inception in 1976 through to present day, the University has graduated over 140,000 students.
Now, over two decades since its beginnings, the University continues to innovate to provide adult students with the most current learning experiences offered through leading edge modalities. The University’s addition of the FlexNet® program significantly broadens the working adult population it reaches by further minimizing time and location dependencies. FlexNet® provides students with the opportunity to enjoy the convenience of the online classroom, along with the face-to-face interaction presented in the on-ground classroom.

One increasingly important pathway to education and training beyond high school is career and technical education. Once considered an option only for low-achieving, noncollege-bound students, career and technical education programs now serve students looking for high-technology jobs and good salaries, which in turn contribute to a state’s economic development. It also serves a growing adult population seeking additional job skills or retraining. This briefing memo is designed to provide policymakers with an overview of the issues surrounding career and technical education in the states, including governance structures, recent legislation and research highlights.
State Governance Structures
In most states, authority over career and technical education lies with either higher education governing or coordinating boards, or with the state board of education. There are, however, two notable examples of governance of career and technical education (CTE) being split between the K-12 and postsecondary sectors.

President Bush Reveals Plans for Improved Mental Health Services
On April 29, President Bush announced the formation of the President's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health to develop recommendations on improving mental heath services. The President selected Dr. Michael Hogan, the Director of the Ohio Department of Mental Health, as the first chair of the commission. In his speech, President Bush emphasized the need for mental illness to be treated like any other physical illness; not as a source of embarrassment. Currently, many Americans do not receive insurance coverage for treatments for mental illness. This lack of coverage may prevent them from living satisfying lives. According to President Bush, the health insurance system must treat mental illness like any other disease. The insurance parity idea is a critical part of his plan. The President demonstrated his commitment to work with Congress in an effort to pass his proposed plan. The President's comments can be read, viewed on video or heard on audio online at www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2002/04/20020429-1.html

This grant will focus on helping 11 th and 12 th -graders at the center that lack life skills and the necessary school credits to graduate. CARF also chose three recipients for Innovation Grants, worth $2,500 each. The grants were awarded to Myrna Pool, for a unique speech and hearing program to be conducted at Whittier Elementary School in the Salt Lake School District; and Terry Linares, principal of Tooele South Alternative School, Tooele School District, to implement a new program to benefit at-risk students at the Tooele Alternative School, Grantsville High School, and Wendover High School. An additional mini-grant for $1,000 was awarded to Joe Jamison, Lighthouse Alternative School , Carbon County , to prepare students for the realities of careers and lifetime decision-making. “CARF's purpose is to be a vehicle for teachers within the organization to make charitable contributions to support children in need as well as teachers and programs that service children,” said CARF Chairman Scott Berryessa. “It is not a large foundation, but the board of directors wants to increase its ability to fulfill its mission and to expand its capabilities. One of the goals of CARF is to raise awareness among UEA members of the existence and purpose of the Foundation and what it is doing.”

Sex and sensibility
By Adam Benson Published: Monday, March 1, 2004 When 12-year-old Justin Reyes had the gumption to unveil this year's Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition to his friends at Belpre Middle School on Feb. 18, a nation shuddered. Again.
After Reyes' parents refused Belpre principal Kathy Garrison's order to send their son for two days to an alternative school that houses students from several districts who get in trouble, Reyes was suspended out-of-school for three days by District Superintendent Tim Swarr.
I can understand how certain images from SI's swimsuit issue can be unappetizing for certain people, and that's fine. But I'm quite sick and tired at efforts by the PC police to legislate and establish good taste based on knee-jerk reactionary paranoia.
For those who don't know, each year Sports Illustrated lodges complaints from housewives, quilting clubs and local chapters of the Knights of Columbus for its so-called promotion of the exploitation of women by posing models in swimsuits in exotic locales.

A group of 21 multimedia students at the Mountainland Applied Technology College in Orem earned a spot as one of NASA's Mars Exploration Student Data Teams. As the only team that is not a math or science program, The MATC Mars team has been creating 3-D models and animations of the two Mars space probes and producing visual materials for Mars scientists to use in their continued research efforts. The team's projects will help scientists monitor topographic and atmospheric elements that could affect the Mars rover missions.
