Day Out With Thomas the Tank Engine at Orange Empire Railway Museum
Check It Out:
10th Annual U.S. Air Race from Mesquite, TX to Monroe, NC from Sept. 23 to Sept. 30.
Can't Live Without:
Winter is coming, and if you are tired of wearing wet shoes during the winter, then order a shoe dryer from Peet . We have 5 of them at our house and there are at least 2 or 3 of them going at a time. They will not damage any shoe, but they will dry any pair of shoes or boots overnight. Peet shoe dryers are the best thing you will ever own!
Fun Stuff:
Visit the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris, CA slightly south of Riverside, CA on any weekend. For only $10 extra, your child can actually ride in the cab of a diesel locomotive...and if you think that's a thrill, adults can "be an engineer for an hour" on the Main Line on Mondays and Wednesdays (

CDC targets E. coli contamination at petting zoos
The Centers for Disease Control has issued federal guidelines for petting zoos after several outbreaks of E. coli From Elizabeth Cohen CNN Medical Unit ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) When Eileen Sweeney took her children Shannon and Michael to a Pennsylvania petting zoo last fall, it seemed like the perfect outing. "It was October and we were going to the pumpkin patch and we petted the animals and went on a hayride," Sweeney said. "We had a really good day." But a couple of days later, Michael developed diarrhea. "And within days of his diarrhea, his diapers were filled with blood, pure blood," she said. It got worse. Michael was rushed to the hospital and almost died. "He was in full renal failure. We had to have the kidney team waiting for us, and he had to have immediate blood transfusions," she said. Michael was diagnosed with E. coli poisoning, which investigators found in the animals at the petting zoo. His sister got sick too, but not as severely. In all, 51 people became ill after visiting the farm. The bacteria do not make animals sick.

Zoo Officials Say Improved Elephant Breeding is Critical
    April 25, 2005
    Corvallis Gazette-Times
by John Nolan, Associated Press writer
The International Elephant Foundation is awarding grants totaling about $100,000 a year to promote research and conservation programs. It signed an agreement in December to work more closely on elephant breeding efforts with the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, which accredits zoos and oversees preservation programs for numerous animal species. Overseers of an international species survival program for elephants said they are coordinating research and preservation efforts to ensure that at least some American zoos will still have elephants in the next 20 to 30 years. "They're not being born fast enough,'' said Robert Wiese, director of animal collections at the Fort Worth Zoo in Texas. U.S. zoos must sharply increase the number of elephants born in captivity to offset an aging population, Dinon said. If the births at U.S. zoos aren't sharply increased, "There's not going to be elephants in zoos in North America any more,'' he said. The expense and time involved in importing elephants, the aging pachyderm population in American zoos and a persistently high mortality rate for infant elephants underscore the need for improved breeding, zoo officials said. In recent years, 30 to 40 percent of elephants born have not survived their first year, although gains have been made with improvements in knowledge and technology, officials said.
