From Compassionate Traveler Alert
March 2003
Elephant Exportation Still Planned from Africa to U.S.

In our alert last September, we reported on the proposed capture of 11 wild African elephants from a national park in Swaziland. Despite an announcement made last fall by Swaziland"s minister of tourism that the elephants would not be removed, and that any move to sell them would violate the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, the elephants are scheduled to be exported to the U.S. this May. Seven of the elephants will go to the Zoological Society of San Diego, which runs the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park in California. The remaining four elephants will go to the Lowry Park Zoo in Florida.
As we reported in September, these elephants are believed to be some of the baby elephants who were brought to Swaziland after witnessing the slaughter of the rest of their family at Kruger National Park in South Africa in 1994. According the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), both the San Diego and Lowry Park zoos have had histories of failing to comply with the Animal Welfare Act, which sets minimum standards for animal care. They both have had questionable conduct towards elephants, and both have histories of sending animals to non-accredited zoos that may dispose of surplus animals by sending them to canned-hunting facilities. This would be a cruel fate for these traumatized orphan elephants who were relocated to Swaziland to spend the rest of their lives in freedom.

Description Table of Contents Awards ... Links "Brilliant. Its clear and unpretentious language and Hancocks' evident passion for and knowledge of his subject made it one of the best books I have read in a long while."Tim Murray, The Age (Melbourne) "This brilliantly researched and persuasive book traces the sociology of animal captivity back to Paleolithic times." Publishers Weekly "The capture and display of wild animals, an ancient and universal phenomenon, embodies a dichotomy, Hancocks explains in this engrossing history of zoos and their role in society. His critique of the miseries associated with their museumlike warehousing of living creatures is electrifying, the perfect lead-in to his discussion of the slow realization that naturalistic habitats are essential to zoo animals' health and happiness." Booklist "[Hancocks] writes authoritatively and compassionately, and fortunately offers some ideas on how to improve zoos for both the animals and the people who visit them."

Familyfun presents great US zoos by Lisa Stiepock and Gregory Lauzon
What are the country's best zoos for families? To answer that question, we assembled a panel of experts and asked them to consider some essentials: Are there lots of fun things for kids to do? Can kids get up close to the animals? Are barriers placed low enough for a stroller-eye view? Are the signs easy to read? Selecting them was no easy decision, but all those chosen offer an unmatched opportunity for your little cubs to cozy up to Mother Nature at her finest. The following is a list of our favorite family-friendly zoos that you won't want to miss. (For the other top zoo picks, see the related links at left). ARIZONA-SONORA DESERT MUSEUM
