Zoo's Pandas Produce First Cub, High Hopes
Joyful but Cautious, Scientists Keep Watch In Risky First Days
By D'Vera Cohn Washington Post Staff Writer Sunday, July 10, 2005; Page A01 The National Zoo's panda Mei Xiang gave birth yesterday to a squealing, squirming cub the size of a stick of butter, and elated zookeepers said she is giving it the tender care that befits its status as one of the world's most endangered animals. Even as they rejoiced in their first panda birth after years of effort, zoo officials cautioned that the coming days would be critical to the cub's survival. They praised the mothering skills of Mei Xiang, who was holding a rubber toy at the moment of birth and at first seemed surprised by her squawking cub. But she quickly gave it her full attention.
Dr. Suzan Murray, chief veterinarian at the National Zoo, monitors the newborn giant panda cub via video Saturday at the zoo.

April 18, 2003 Veterinary teams and animal welfare workers are poised to go to the aid of the zoo animals left in Baghdad as soon as travel restrictions are lifted. "Not a lot is known about the status of the animals, although more is being learned each day," said David Jones, director of the North Carolina Zoo. Zoo professionals originally thought there might be several hundred animals at El Zawra, the city's main zoo, but now believe the number may be only several dozen. "It seems like only the big cats and some of the larger animals, like bears, survived. A lot of animals were stolen and quite possibly eaten during the looting," he said. "That certainly occurred in Kabul, Afghanistan, where a number of those animals were taken and put in the pot. We've had reports of camels wandering around; they'll be ok, they can just nibble on whatever's around." Jones, who has considerable experience working in the Middle East, is coordinating fund raising and relief efforts in the United States under the auspices of the American Zoological and Aquarium Association (AZA). The AZA performed a similar role for the Kabul Zoo in Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban.

Go >> The arrival of Le Le and Ya Ya at the Memphis Zoo this week brings the number of giant pandas in the United States to nine, spread across four zoos. It's not easy getting them here. Because pandas are highly endangered, international treaties forbid their trade for commercial purposes. In order to bring a pair of pandas into the United States, each zoo has to acquire a permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and develop a highly detailed research plan. More than 80 separate studies are being conducted by the four U.S. zoos, according to a recent survey by the American Zoological and Aquarium Association (AZA). Each zoo has a particular research focus. "San Diego's emphasis is on the communication system of giant pandas, Zoo Atlanta focuses primarily on behavioral research, including studies of giant panda maternal, developmental, and reproductive behavior, the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. is doing technology transfer, workshops, and training, and all are doing overlapping work in captive breeding and management," said Donald Lindburg, head of the office of giant panda conservation at the San Diego Zoo in California.

This list was compiled from the International Species Information System, 26 Dec, 2001. (Some inaccuracies resulting from reporting delays are unavoidable.) I am in the process of contacting each of these facilities to verify their holdings. Please check back often for updates. The ISIS listed several Zoos that haven't exhibited hummingbirds for several years, which I discovered when I contacted these facilities. This suggests that the demands of caring for these birds is so high that many zoos elect to eliminate their exhibits. If any visitors to this page have more recent or complete information on the following zoos, or any additional zoos with living hummingbird exhibits, I would greatly appreciate their
