"Remembering Bob Thomas: His Influence on the American Indian Liberation Struggle"
The Indian picture isn't any blacker than it always was. It is just that American Indians are trying to do something about their problems and injustices. They are speaking out more and making their wishes known. Maybe a new day is dawning for the Indian. -Robert K. Thomas, Indian Voices Although Robert K. Thomas was known primarily as an ethnographer and cultural anthropologist of considerable stature, his interests and activities transcended all boundaries conventionally associated with those fields. Stan Steiner, for one, went to some lengths in recording Bob's involvement with organizations like the National Indian Youth Council during the 1960s, and careful students will discover not a few explicitly political treatises published under his by-line, mostly appearing in the American Indian activist-pulp venues of the day, papers like Indian Voices and ABC: Americans Before Columbus . On the scholarly side of things, too, he was known to make such excursions into what has today come to be known as "applied" anthropology. His essay "Powerless Politics," for example, published in the winter 1966-67 edition of New University Thought, a small-circulation academic journal produced at the University of Chicago, is known to have had a significant impact upon the leadership of the fish-in protests of the Pacific Northwest in 1967, occupation of Alcatraz Island in 1969, and 1972 Trail of Broken Treaties.

12th Symposium on Education Meteorology in the US Virgin Islands David J. Smith, University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands The Division of Science and Mathematics at the University of the Virgin Islands will make its inaugural offering, during the spring semester of 2003, of Introduction to Meteorology, utilizing the American Meteorological Society's course Online Weather Studies. The University of the Virgin Islands is an HBCU liberal arts institution with campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix, with a total student population of approximately 3000. The Division of Science and Mathematics offers degrees in physics, chemistry, biology, marine biology, mathematics, and computer science. The course will be conducted primarily as an asynchronous distant learning course, but will also include weekly one-hour tutorials on each campus. The director and primary professor for the course will be physicist Dr. Dave Smith, who will also conduct the tutorials on the St. Thomas campus. Physicist Dr. Michael Henry will conduct the tutorials on the St. Croix campus. While topics in meteorology have routinely been a part of the curriculum of the physics and general education courses, the Introduction to Meteorology / Online Weather Studies course will be the first course at UVI dedicated to the study of weather. It represents the first step in the development of a new program in meteorological studies. Utilizing the Virgin Islands' recent designation as an EPSCoR state, UVI is in the preliminary planning stages of a broad-based research program. Dr. Smith is working with colleagues in physics and chemistry to establish programs in LIDAR, weather monitoring and weather modeling that can provide research opportunities for undergraduates. Introduction to Meteorology will provide UVI students with the fundamentals necessary to participate in this research and to pursue careers in weather studies.

Raouf Mama, a Professor at Eastern Connecticut State University and the author of several books of folk tales, concluded a visit to Benin during which he worked with local English teachers, Peace Corps Volunteers, and children in Abomey, Ouidah, Lokossa, Parakou, Cotonou, and SOS Children's Village on using story-telling as a teaching and motivational tool. The teachers' evaluations and comments were uniformly enthusiastic: "I can return proudly to my school and share with my students," "We have seen the magic and strength of stories," "The goal of a teacher is the same as that of a story teller, to instruct, entertain, and inspire," "When a students is inspired, he can do his best to succeed," and "Sincerely, I'm delighted." Teachers also expressed the wish that Mr. Mama's presentations be recorded and distributed on video and printed in a book to reach more teachers nationwide.

Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are located at an active plate boundary between the North American plate and the northeast corner of the Caribbean plate. The region was subject in historical times to large magnitude earthquakes and devastating tsunamis. A major downward tilt of the sea floor north of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, large submarine rockslides, and an unusually large negative gravity anomaly are also indicative of a tectonically active region. Scientists have so far failed to explain the deformation of this region in a coherent and predictable picture, such as in California, and this has hampered their ability to assess seismic and tsunami hazards in the region. The NE corner of the Caribbean is unique among the seismically-active regions of the United States in that it is mostly covered by water. This fact presents an additional challenge for seismic and tsunami hazard assessment and mitigation. During the first day of the workshop, participants from universities, federal institutions, and consulting firms in Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the continental U.S., Dominican Republic, and Europe reviewed the present

MSNBC staff and news service reports CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands - Raw sewage discharged into the waters around the U.S. Virgin Islands is killing coral reefs at an alarming rate, researchers have documented in a recent study and book. Coral reefs are far more likely to develop disease and die when exposed to bacteria and nutrients in raw sewage than coral in unpolluted areas, according to the study published in the Puerto Rico-based Caribbean Journal of Science. "It appears to be a major factor contributing to coral disease," said biologist Longin Kaczmarsky. He co-authored the study with scientists from Long Island University in New York and the University of Puerto Rico. The study compared the health of coral reefs to wastewater release around St. Croix, the largest island in the U.S. territory of 110,000 residents.
