St. Thomas is 40 miles to the north of St. Croix. It is 13 miles long and 3 miles wide. St. John is 9 miles long and 5 miles wide. Two-thirds of St. John is a national park donated to the government in 1956 by philanthropist Laurance S. Rockefeller. Water Island sits just off the southwest coast of St. Thomas and is almost exclusively a residential community.
