Students are surrounded by a range of tzedakah projects, including monetary donations to a special relief fund and a book collection for evacuees at Camp Edwards. "We need to constantly ‘judge’ ourselves to determine if we are doing enough for others," wrote Rabbi Stuart Klammer, Elementary School principal, in a message to parents. There are academic aspects to the tragedy as well, as illustrated in Grades 3-6, where Elementary School Science Coordinator Elaine Kohen is using some common materials and the latest technology to teach a series of lessons that include geography, meteorology, environmental protection and some basic engineering. "I know you’ve seen a lot of things on the news, and it’s hard to think about the sadness of so many people. But it’s important to educate yourselves as to what’s going on," she told a sixth grade class last week. She urged the students to find newspaper, magazine and Internet articles addressing the disaster from a scientific perspective for the bulletin board, and highlight key passages to benefit younger students’ understanding. Mrs. Kohen, a Newton resident who holds master’s degrees in science in education and special education, presented a "design challenge to her classes: "How do you build a levee in the middle of a flooded area?"

    175. THE WAY THE WORLD WORKS
An attempt to correct basic misunderstandings about the book. Proverbs is a guidebook, describing general rules for living, not a book of promises. Comments on current living in the light of Scripture.
    http://www.krisandsusanna.com/Writing/The_Way_The_World_Works.htm
    THE WAY THE WORLD WORKS
    Introduction
    What is a proverb?
As a boy I remember a women whose son had gone astray claiming God's promise from Proverbs 22:6, "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." She was certain that because she had raised her son in the Christian faith, God's promise to her was that her son would eventually turn back to faith in Jesus. Every Wednesday night at prayer meeting she would make a point of claiming what she thought was God's promise and asking for our prayers. This poor woman was deluded through a misunderstanding of the book of Proverbs into believing that the proverbs are actually promises. This leads to a quid pro quo attitude toward God: if I do this then God is obligated to do that. The idea that we can obligate God to do for us as a result of something we do for him is little different that paganism. In pagan religions people are constantly trying through their actions to force the gods to give them what they want. When the pagans do that we call it idolatry.
