The Consumers Union Report on Licit and Illicit Drugs by Edward M. Brecher and the Editors of Consumer Reports Magazine, 1972 Many factors contributed to this meteoric rise in popularity of the cigarette, including improved cigarette paper, automatic manufacturing machinery that lowered the price, and intensive nationwide advertising campaigns for the new cigarette brands. But the major factor was the appearance of a new type of tobacco––– known variously as "bright," "flue cured," or "Virginia"––– which made cigarette smoke more readily inhalable. Cigarettes made of the new tobacco were called mild ("not a cough in a carload") because the smoke could be drawn deep into the lungs. The size of the new cigarettes was also admirably adapted to the nicotine dose most people prefer. It was therefore easier for women and children to learn to smoke cigarettes; the likelihood of nicotine overdose among novices, with such acute toxic side effects as pallor, sweating, nausea, vomiting, and even loss of consciousness (fainting), was minimized.

144. AMBIOS Home Page
The objectives of this project are to determine the interrelationships between the physical properties of ecosystems and the ecology of organisms in the generation of biodiversity, to measure objectively the resultant diversity and to produce operational concepts of biodiversity which are of general applicability and importance.

Integrating Environmental and Population Variation: A Model for Biodiversity Studies (AMBIOS)
Areas of study:
  • The relationships between breeding ecology, niche width and biogeographic range, and their bearing on the future dynamics of biodiversity at a time of accelerating environmental change and extinction will be studied.
  • The development of operational concepts for assessing and describing the very basis of biodiversity will be established This will involve evaluating and comparing phenotypic and genotypic features as measures of the buffering capacity of the components of biodiversity with respect to changing environmental factors, and will be achieved by focusing on genetic heterogeneity levels and phenotypic responses in relation to the environment, and on thermal tolerance.
  • The determination of the mechanisms involved in the transition from polymorphic, interbreeding populations to those of species status, and the elucidation of how such changes can be distinguished from phenotypic plasticity, will be addressed.
  • Techniques for the identification of species and 'lower' taxonomic units will be developed, and new molecular methods tested in those species in which the levels of polymorphism are high.

Summary and discussion of 12 articles published by R. F. Newbold from 19812001 on the 5th century Greek epic, The Dionysiaca, by Nonnus of Panopolis. At the Centre for European studies and general Linguistics, University of Adelaide.

Nonnus’ Dionysiaca: S ummary and Discussion of 15 articles by R. F. Newbold This site is devoted to a review of over 20 years of my research into the longest epic to survive from antiquity, Nonnus’ Dionysiaca. This 48-book poem is over 21,000 hexameters long, considerably longer than the works of the great forerunner that Nonnus sought to surpass, Homer, whose Iliad runs to over 15, 000 lines, and his Odyssey, over 12,000. Apart from his origin in Panopolis in Egypt, and being the probable author of a verse paraphrase of the St. John Gospel and probably living in the 5 th Century C.E, nothing is known of a poet who has been widely dismissed as unreadable and decadent. Yet he was an influential author in his day. His work offers many rewards and provides much to admire for those willing to lay aside requirements that an author be a master of plot and character, and who can accept that Nonnus is more about theme and motif. That he will ever be elevated to the canon of must-read authors from antiquity or western literature is too much to hope for but it is pleasing to see the recent appearance of the first monograph on Nonnus in English, and an attempt to consolidate the partial rehabilitation that has occurred in recent years as understanding of the author and his methods and aims have deepened (R. Shorrock, The Challenge of Epic.

In particular it seeks to explore the confluence of depth psychotherapy with the world's contemplative traditions. Contemplative studies value being present, mindfully in each successive moment, with all of our experience, whilst cultivating an attitude of unconditional friendliness towards oneself and others. While the personal transformation this creates does not guarantee social change, we none-the-less believe that increased contemplative awareness may help individuals and groups find generous and more spacious solutions to life's problems. The Forum offers information about itself and received from many independent sources, for the general public, those in training, and for qualified psychotherapists, pursuing continuing professional development. General Information
    What is diabetes?
Diabetes mellitus is a group of diseases characterized by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action, or both. Diabetes can be associated with serious complications and premature death, but people with diabetes can take steps to control the disease and lower the risk of complications.
    Types of diabetes
Type 1 diabetes was previously called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) or juvenile-onset diabetes. Type 1 diabetes develops when the body's immune system destroys pancreatic beta cells, the only cells in the body that make the hormone insulin that regulates blood glucose. This form of diabetes usually strikes children and young adults, although disease onset can occur at any age. Type 1 diabetes may account for 5% to 10% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. Risk factors for type 1 diabetes may include autoimmune, genetic, and environmental factors.

    Vaccine Safety
    Overview of Vaccine Safety
Importance of Vaccine Safety Perhaps the greatest success story in public health is the reduction of infectious diseases resulting from the use of vaccines. Routine immunization has eradicated smallpox from the globe and led to the near elimination of wild polio virus. Vaccines have reduced preventable infectious diseases to an all-time low and now few people experience the devastating effects of measles, pertussis and other illnesses. Prior to approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), vaccines are extensively tested by scientists to ensure that they are effective and safe. Vaccines are the best defense we have against infectious diseases. However, no vaccine is 100% safe or effective. Differences in the way individual immune systems react to a vaccine account for rare occasions when people are not protected following immunization or when they experience side effects. Top National

Contact Us Students from colleges and universities around the world enroll at AUC on a non-degree basis for a summer, winter, semester, or full academic year. While most are in their third or junior year, sophomores, seniors and individuals who already hold a bachelor's degree are also welcome. AUC's study abroad program is one of direct enrollment, meaning that students select courses from general undergraduate listings and are not limited to a fixed set of courses. Applicants enrolled in a program of study at another college or university must be recommended by their home institutions and should plan course selection with their academic advisors or registrars before applying. Since AUC is accredited in the U.S. as well as in Egypt, students from U.S. universities are usually able to transfer credits to their home institutions. AUC is recognized by many U.S. colleges as an approved overseas study site for their students and has formal agreements with several institutions. While 80 to 100 foreign colleges a year may be represented on campus, a few that regularly send students are Brown, Cornell, Duke, Georgetown, Northeastern and Tufts Universities, Kalamazoo College, and the University of Wisconsin.

    National Security Education Program
    David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships
NSEP was designed to provide American undergraduates with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation, in exchange for a commitment to seek work in the federal government. As students of other cultures and languages, NSEP Scholars begin to acquire the international competence needed to communicate effectively across borders, to understand other perspectives, and to analyze increasingly fluid economic and political realities. U.S. National Security Focus: NSEP focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. It draws on a broad definition of national security applied by the President in his annual National Security Strategy, recognizing that the scope of national security has expanded to include not only the traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American well-being, but also the challenges of global society, including: sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness. International Focus: NSEP scholarships are intended to provide support to U.S. undergraduates who will pursue the study of languages and cultures currently underrepresented in study abroad and critical to U.S. national security.
