General Object-Oriented Database for Software Engineering Processes (ESPRIT-III Project 6115)
The objective of GOODSTEP is to enhance and improve the functionality of a fully object-oriented database management system to yield a platform suited to applications such as software engineering environments (SEEs). The baseline of the project is the O2 database management system (DBMS), which already includes many of the features required. The consortium has identified O2 enhancements required to fully support the anticipated next generation of SEEs, such as integrity constraints and triggers, change management, new advanced transaction mechanisms, specialised class libraries, versioning of objects, deductive capabilities and an advanced graphical interface and programming support environment. A number of advanced software engineering tools will be built on top of the enhanced O2 database. These tools will support conceptual modelling in the analysis phase of a software project, modular design and imparative programming. In addition, tool generators will be developed to exploit the features provided by the enhanced O2 database. The development of an environment enabling the definition and execution of software processes which guide the use of the tools will form a central part of the work. The GOODSTEP system will be demonstrated through two case studies involving British Airways in the UK and Engineering in Italy, which will make full use of the platform developed. The industrial users, who have substantial knowledge in developing large-scale software, will provide requirements and subsequently use and validate GOODSTEP's services and tools.

  • 193. Institute For Aloe Studies
The propagation and conservation of the genus. The study of the genus and the education of the general public about this genus.
    http://www.aloestudies.org
The Institute for Aloe Studies was formed for two reasons; the propagation and conservation of Aloes, and the study of Aloes and the education of the general public about Aloes. The Institute for Aloe Studies is propagating Aloes to offer for sale to the general public. We are establishing a collection of plants to produce seeds and cuttings to perpetuate and disseminate the different species of Aloe. The offering of these domestically produced plants will reduce pressure on wild populations from illegal collection. Our collection of plants will serve as a DNA database as many species of Aloe are becoming rare in habitat. We are also exchanging plant material with other botanical institutions. The Institute for Aloe Studies will develop and offer horticulturally desirable Aloe hybrids. Conservation of Aloes will be accomplished by offering domestically produced plants and by encouraging the establishment of reserves and protection of habitat. The benefits of offering domestically produced plants were mentioned earlier. We hope to work with botanists in determining what Aloes are in most danger and to help support the establishment of reserves and protection of habitat. Education includes development of web site dedicated to Aloes and through displays and plantings of Aloes in schools and public places. The web site will have a photographic record and the scientific descriptions of the different species of Aloe, which will help people identify and research Aloes. There will also be an on-line chat room in which people can discuss Aloes. We will have a place to submit questions about Aloes.
