Although gall bladder surgery brings in significant revenue for hospitals and physicians,
the research clearly shows that simple dietary changes can result in
dramatic and immediate health improvements for people with gall stones.
All of this without the risks and side effects of gall bladder surgery.
Unfortunately, once gall stones have been diagnosed by a physician,
the research on the effectiveness of dietary interventions is not conveyed to the patient. Information for this article was located from the

Cholecystitis (Gallstone Inflammation)
Evidence of an Environmental Disease
The local Melbourne physician said she would die without the surgery. He said removal of her gallbladder was the only way we could stop the painful attacks in her upper abdomen. The patient was the 80 year grandmother of a close friend of mine in Melbourne Beach, Florida. She was suffering pains on a regular basis, however the research shows the risk of her dying from the anesthesia alone was over 1% - too great as far as we were concerned. What other options did we have with this common disease known as Cholecystitis? To find out as much as we could regarding gallstones and the gallbladder removal epidemic, we spent four days at the University of Florida Medical Library researching the medical journals for information. The first thing which shocked us is how common this disease really is: Each year over 500,000 people are admitted into hospitals for gallbladder disease. Two-thirds of them are treated surgically. In studies of 60-90 year people, 60% of the women and 30-50% of men were found to have gallstones. The other surprising factor was how the incidence of the disease differs dramatically among populations. A large study in India found North Indians had gall stones seven times higher than South Indians. The only difference between the two groups was that the North Indians were found to consume 8-19 times more saturated fats in their diet. South Indians were found to use unsaturated fats and consume larger amounts of rice.

HARVARD-SMITHSONIAN CENTER FOR ASTROPHYSICS NEWS RELEASE

Posted: April 4, 2003
A review of more than 200 climate studies led by researchers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics has determined that the 20th century is neither the warmest century nor the century with the most extreme weather of the past 1000 years. The review also confirmed that the Medieval Warm Period of 800 to 1300 A.D. and the Little Ice Age of 1300 to 1900 A.D. were worldwide phenomena not limited to the European and North American continents. While 20th century temperatures are much higher than in the Little Ice Age period, many parts of the world show the medieval warmth to be greater than that of the 20th century. Smithsonian astronomers Willie Soon and Sallie Baliunas, with co-authors Craig Idso and Sherwood Idso (Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change) and David Legates (Center for Climatic Research, University of Delaware), compiled and examined results from more than 240 research papers published by thousands of researchers over the past four decades. Their report, covering a multitude of geophysical and biological climate indicators, provides a detailed look at climate changes that occurred in different regions around the world over the last 1000 years. "Many true research advances in reconstructing ancient climates have occurred over the past two decades," Soon says, "so we felt it was time to pull together a large sample of recent studies from the last 5-10 years and look for patterns of variability and change. In fact, clear patterns did emerge showing that regions worldwide experienced the highs of the Medieval Warm Period and lows of the Little Ice Age, and that 20th century temperatures are generally cooler than during the medieval warmth."

Only today are they beginning to gain their rightful place in sport's Hall of Fame. Despite this, problems still remain. In this article, John C. Walter, Ph.D. Professor of American Ethnic Studies and Director of the Blacks in Sports Project at the University of Washington in Seattle explains why The Changing Status of the Black Athlete in the 20th Century United States by John C. Walter
Contents
In the United States since World War II, the world of sport has undergone dramatic changes. The first decade after the war witnessed the resurgence of baseball as the national sport, particularly with the return of hero-athletes, the formation and development of the National Basketball Association, and the transformation of professional football into a powerhouse organization vying with baseball as the national sport. That competition continues to this day, with the profound irony that in some quarters the Black athlete is now seen as "saving" baseball In the pre-World War II years, the Black athlete was restricted from competition in all the professional sports. Only in the Olympics, because of its international nature, were Black athletes allowed to compete unrestricted.

Overview
The study of how the modern United States emerged begins with the Progressive era. It deserves careful study because, among other things, it included the nation's most vibrant set of reform ideas and campaigns since the 1830s-40s. Progressives were a diverse lot with various agendas that sometimes jostled uneasily, but all reformers focused on a set of corrosive problems arising from rapid industrialization, urbanization, waves of immigration, and business and political corruption. Students can be inspired by how fervently the Progressives applied themselves to the renewal of American democracy. They can also profit from understanding the distinctively female reform culture that contributed powerfully to the movement. Two of the problems confronted by Progressives are still central today. First, the Progressives faced the dilemma of how to maintain the material benefits flowing from the industrial revolution while bringing the powerful forces creating those benefits under democratic control and while enlarging economic opportunity. Second, Progressives faced the knotted issue of how to maintain democracy and national identity amid an increasingly diverse influx of immigrants and amid widespread political corruption and the concentration of political power. Of all the waves of reformism in American history, Progressivism is notable for its nearly all-encompassing agenda. As its name implies, it stood for progress, and that put it squarely in the American belief in the perfectible society.

Abstract: This paper examines the experience of Chinese accountants transforming themselves into a profession during the early 20lh century. It delineates how the experience was shaped by an intersection of economic development, the political culture and the nationalist movement in semi-colonial Shanghai. Chinese accountants responded to the daily manifestations of these larger historical forces by combining their professional self-interests with a nationalist agenda and by adapting to the changing political environment. The history and legacy of this experience provides a point of reference for observing the re-emergence of the accounting profession in China since the end of the Maoist era.

Syllabus COURSE DESCRIPTION World War Two transformed both the United States and the American people. The country emerged from the war as the most successful and dominant nation in the world and soon embarked in a "Cold War" with the Soviet Union that would last until 1989. Americans themselves had experienced unprecedented economic growth during the war that would continue for several decades, but the impact of this prosperity was uneven, as was progress in gender and race relations. Both of these legacies of the war would shape American society, politics, culture, and economy throughout the rest of the 20th century. This course is a survey of American history from 1945 to the present. We will examine the legacies of World War Two, post-war American society, the Cold War at home and abroad, civil rights struggles, 1960s politics and culture of dissent, liberation movements among women, African-, Asian-, Native-Americans, Chicanos, gays and lesbians, war in Southeast Asia, new immigration, and society and politics at the end of the century. The emphasis will be on reading, critiquing, and interpreting history from the perspectives of ordinary people from diverse backgrounds. Thus, your readings are primarily first-person accounts and you will engage in a research paper and project using primary sources. This course is open to undergraduate majors and non-majors. There will be one in-class midterm exam, one research paper, and one take-home final exam paper. We will view films and use the internet to compliment lectures and class discussions.
