It moves differently, and in ways still unarticulated, on the force field of contemporary culture, participating in what Fredric Jameson has called a "revival of storytelling knowledge" in the postmodern world and giving voice to the increased "vitality of small narrative units" (Foreword xi) but inadequately explained with respect both to its modernist precursors in Chekhov, Joyce, and Welty and to its raw materials, life at the end of the twentieth century. The end of epiphany and the exhaustion of familiar reading strategies and genre definitions call for new ways of reading and for a redefinition of both the narrative and the cultural logic of short fiction. Unlike the unified, complex modernist short story, grounded in image or metaphor and moving toward revelation, many stories of the last decade and a half are marked by depthlessness, incoherence, and ephemerality. For NASA, the sixties had ended in triumph: Humans had walked on the moon and NASA had put them there. For the space agency, the success of the first lunar landing was an invitation to dream even bigger dreams. NASA administrator Tom Paine and his deputies planned a stunning array of space activities so extensive that they would live up to the vision presented in Collier's magazine in the 1950s. There would be space stations in Earth orbit, a base on the moon and human missions to Mars. But these dreams were met by a new, harsh reality: the 1960s "heyday" for space budgets was over. Originally Posted: January 30, 2003 The 20th century was a remarkable period for the American worker, as wages rose, fringe benefits grew, and working conditions improved. Even though many statistics were sketchy at the beginning of the century, the picture is clear: The American workforce was much better off at the end of the century than it was at the beginning. The statistics used to understand the condition of working Americans also improved over the course of the century, as we discuss in these articles excerpted from the Report on the American Workforce (U.S. Department of Labor, 2001). Comparison of the American workforce at the end of the 20th century with that at the beginning shows numerous changes. Some of these are dramatic; others less so. Many of these changes are well known, but some are not. In certain cases, statistical data are lacking to make quantitative comparisons between the beginning and end of the century; but most of the changes are discernible, nevertheless.

The Ismaili Community History 20th Century Download PDF file 20th Century Under the leadership of Sir Sultan Muhammad Shah, Aga Khan III, the first half of the twentieth century was a period of significant development for the Ismaili community. Numerous institutions for social and economic development were established on the Indian sub-continent and in East Africa. Ismailis have marked the Jubilees of their Imams with public celebrations, which are symbolic affirmations of the ties that link the Ismaili Imam and his followers. Although the Jubilees have no real religious significance, they serve to reaffirm the Imamat's world-wide commitment to the improvement of the quality of human life, especially in the developing countries. The Jubilees of Sir Sultan Muhammad Shah, Aga Khan III, are well remembered. During his 72 years of Imamat (1885-1957), the community celebrated his Golden (1937), Diamond (1946) and Platinum (1954) Jubilees. To show their appreciation and affection, the Ismailis weighed their Imam in gold, diamonds and, symbolically, in platinum, respectively, the proceeds of which were used to further develop major social welfare and development institutions in Asia and Africa.

About TB th Century Tuberculosis Research th CENTURY TUBERCULOSIS RESEARCH The scourge of TB is an ancient one, with evidence of the disease reaching back millenia. However, real scientific understanding of TB did not begin until 1882, when Robert Koch identified Mycobacterium tuberculosis as the causative agent of the disease. Studies in the years following this discovery resulted in a large body of research and scientists with important insights into TB. However, this information is difficult for today’s researchers to access. To help address this problem, in 2000-2001 Aeras (then the Sequella Global TB Foundation) supported a program to identify important scientific publications by 20 th century TB researchers and make these “landmark articles” available online. The Landmark Articles in TB Research project identified journal articles that made a major contribution to the current understanding of M. tuberculosis and the disease it causes. Five 20 th century pioneers in TB research were asked to select two groups of papers: those that had the most impact on their work and those of their own work that they believed were the most influential. The authors and publishers of these articles granted permission to have them digitized and made available on the Aeras website.
