Course Description Mondays, 4:30 - 7:15 pm, HBC 020 This course is a survey of rhetoric as a discipline in the 20th century. Although we will be partly concerned with coverage of the major thinkers, this course will be organized according to three broad questions, questions we will address and explore by means of our readings this semester:
  • Why and how did rhetoric re-emerge as a viable subject in the 20th century?
  • How have various thinkers conceptualized the scope of rhetoric?
  • How does rhetoric function as a method, theme, and/or theory in conjunction with more concrete cultural topoi (such as gender, ethnicity, and technology)?
Our goal in this course is not to arrive at final answers for these questions, of course. The tentative answers for these questions will affect each other, and raise yet more questions, all of which will give us some sense of the complex histories and theories that surround rhetoric as a discipline. Teaching the 20th-Century History of the United States. ERIC Digest.
It is important to reaffirm the teaching of recent United States history in secondary schools. Diane Ravitch and Chester E. Finn (1987, 84) state this well: "If we think it important that they [17-year-old students of 1986] understand the three decades between the Second World War and their own sixth birthdays [in 1975], we cannot expect this instructional job to be done for them by the daily newspapers or the nightly news; we have to teach this period as the history that it now is." Unfortunately, there are several obstacles to teaching this period of history, including time constraints, student apathy for the subject, and limited help from textbooks. This ERIC Digest (1) examines the coverage of 20th-century United States history; (2) discusses the consequences of limited coverage for student learning; (3) provides ideas on improvement of teaching and learning 20th-century United States history; and (4) lists ERIC resources dealing with all these facets of the topic.

Back in the old days before 1994, students had to use textbooks, magazines, television and the library to collect information. These are still good things, but now you can also use the World Wide Web. Explore the Internet links on this page and look for good facts, quotations, examples, images, sound clips and video files. Imagine that you're an explorer in cyberspace and your job is to come back from a virtual journey with lots of artifacts and souvenirs to teach people back home what you learned! What's collected can then be used to complete your Popular Culture Project. Keep this question in mind as you work: What's it all about? How do the links on this page describe what we're studying?
