America from the Great Depression to World War II: Photographs from the FSA and OWI, ca. 1935-1945
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/fsowhome.html
"The images in the Farm Security Administration-Office of War Information Collection are among the most famous documentary photographs ever produced. Created by a group of U.S. government photographers, the images show Americans in every part of the nation. In the early years, the project emphasized rural life and the negative impact of the Great Depression, farm mechanization, and the Dust Bowl. In later years, the photographers turned their attention to the mobilization effort for World War II. The core of the collection consists of about 164,000 black-and-white photographs. This release provides access to over 112,000 of these images; future additions will expand the black-and-white offering. The FSA-OWI photographers also produced about 1600 color photographs during the latter days of the project."

Doubts on Whether 20th Century the Hottest Ever
By Cristina Hernández-Espinoza*
Some U.S. scientists question the theories that have served as the basis of the global fight against climate change, saying periods of unusually warm or cool temperatures are explained by natural fluctuations in the Earth's climate processes. SAN FRANCISCO - Assertions that the 20th century was the warmest of the millennium and that within a hundred years the Earth's average temperatures could rise 3.5 degrees centigrade are two of the most publicized hypotheses in the international community's battle to curb climate change.
But is there sufficient evidence to sustain those theories? Not according to astrophysicist Willie Soon.
After analyzing fossils, ice accumulation rates, sediments on the ocean floor and the rings in tree trunk cross-sections, among other indicators that scientists refer to as "paleoclimate proxies", Soon suggests that the measurements that have given rise to global climate policies are flawed.
As a researcher at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics at Harvard University in the United States, Soon heads a team that collected and analyzed more than 200 scientific studies produced over the past 10 years.

January 30, 2002 Two separate teams of scientists are predicting more extreme rainfall and greater flooding in this century.
Both teams, one from the United States and the other from Europe, attribute the expected pattern to global warming accelerated by human activities. Although people may adapt to gradual climate change, the effects of extreme rain and flooding are often broad, devastating, and costly to society. Landslides, avalanches, and flooding damage infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and buildings, and hurt agricultural productivity because of lost crops and soil erosion. Disaster relief often requires enormous funding, and the loss of human life may also be high. The two new studies, published in the January 31 issue of the journal

Immigrants in the United States — 2000
A Snapshot of America's Foreign-Born Population
January 2001 by Steven A. Camarota Download the pdf version
Each month the Census Bureau conducts the Current Population Survey (CPS), the primary purpose of which is to collect employment data. The March CPS includes an extra-large sample of Hispanics and is considered the best source for information on persons born outside of the United States — referred to as foreign-born by the Census Bureau, though for the purposes of this report, foreign-born and immigrant are used synonymously. Analysis of the March 2000 CPS done by the Center for Immigration Studies indicates that 28.4 million immigrants now live in the United States, the largest number ever recorded in the nation’s history, and a 43 percent increase since 1990. As a percentage of the population, immigrants now account for more than one in 10 residents (10.4 percent), the highest percentage in 70 years. Other findings in the new Center report:
  • More than 1.2 million legal and illegal immigrants combined now settle in the United States each year.
The number of immigrants living in the United States has more than tripled since 1970, from 9.6 million to 28.4 million. As a percentage of the U.S. population, immigrants have more than doubled, from 4.7 percent in 1970 to 10.4 percent in 2000.
