In Memoriam Current Class Notes Class Notes before Summer 2002 Dale Allen (BAE '41) retired from the Stockholm, Calif., school district after 50 years as a teacher and counselor. He also spent five years working in adult education. Warren P. Conrad (BAE '49, MEd '53) served on the faculty of Yuma High School for 34 years and has completed his 19th year of retirement. In 1990 he was recognized with a Distinguished Citizen Award from the UA Alumni Association and a Distinguished Service Award from the UA College of Education. Nancy Berge (BAE '58) received the Sidney S. Woods Alumni Service Award from the University of Arizona Alumni Association in June 2002. She was recognized for her service with UA projects in Maricopa County, Ariz. She is also a founding and continuing member of the College of Education Advisory Board. Why was this study done? A. We conducted this study because of a report of a possible cluster (unusual number of cases) of multiple sclerosis (MS) among children who grew up in the Kern Place–Mission Hills area of El Paso in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s and because of related environmental concerns. Q. What did this study find? A. We found 14 cases of definite and probable MS among former Mesita students. Based on national MS prevalence estimates, we would have expected to see only seven cases. Overall, for former Mesita students, there were twice as many people with MS as we would have expected to find, based on national rates. No cases were reported for the E.B. Jones cohort. Q. Why are there more cases of MS than expected among the former Mesita students? A. We do not know. This study was designed only to identify and count the number of MS cases to determine if there was a true excess of cases. The number of MS cases that were found was not big enough to allow the scientific investigation of possible causes. We are currently working with other states to find out if a larger study pooling multiple MS clusters would allow us to study the causes of MS. Q. We identified and confirmed 14 cases of MS among former Mesita students. No cases were reported among former E.B. Jones students. The number of people with MS among former Mesita students is twice as high as expected, based on national estimates. We were able to identify limited historic environmental and biological data for the study area. These results are reported in a separate addendum to the report. This study was not designed to investigate the specific cause or causes of MS and the results cannot tell us why there is an excess of MS among the former Mesita students. I don't know what tommake of his cap. Notice the sandals and stripped ankle socks. Major changes occurred in boys' fashions in the period from World War II through the 1960s. Boys moved from short pants and knickers to long pants. By the end of the period only very small boys were dressing up in short pants. Two major stalwarts were introduced, jeans and "T"-shirts, staples which are now worn around the world. American boys wore jeans in the 1950s, both for play and school. By the 1960s, however, shorts for casual wear and play began to increase in popularity. Garments Suits Suits were less commonly worn as casual styles became increasingly accepted as families moved to the suburbs. Suits change from large lapels in the 1940s to very narrow lapels opular in the 1960s. The Eton suit for little boys gained great popularity during this period. The Eton jacket was a short, collarless jackrt, in various materials. It was usually worn with short grey pants. Various types of sports jackets gained specia; populatity in the 1950s. Searsucker suits appeared in the 1920s, but became especially popular in the 1950s.
