Kane Experimental Forest Introduction: Established March 23, 1932, although research began as early as 1927 or 28. Primary mission has been forest management research, although watershed research was included in the beginning, and wildlife research is part of the current program. On-going long-term studies include individual tree and understory vegetation measurements; treatments include thinnings, regeneration cuts, uneven-age cuts, and long-term measurements of unmanaged forest as well. Forest is heavily used for training and tours for educational, professional, and landowner groups. NADP data collected since 1978.

The NEP Program
GLOBEC scientists study the coupling between physical and biological processes, using past and present climate variability as a proxy for future climate change. The research approach (and challenge) is to combine modeling, retrospective analysis of historical data, and process research into an integrated program that will produce regional climate change scenarios and quantitative assessments of the sensitivity of selected marine ecosystems to climate variability and climate change.
The Pacific Ecosystem
Recent studies have documented that the physical and biological dynamics of the eastern Pacific are sensitive to natural climate variability on time scales ranging from seasonal to interdecadal, and spatial scales from local to basin-wide. Ecosystem structure is known to be closely coupled to variations in physical forcing, thus sensitivity of the coupled physical-biological system to climate variability implies great sensitivity to climate change Fisheries production domains and general circulation in the NEP Ocean (From Ware and McFarlane, 1989). February (top) and August (bottom) SST differences between 1977-86 and 1966-75. Large positive changes (warmer water in more recent regime are red; cooler water is blue) are widespread along the west coast during winter and summer, with largest differences during winter. Curry's Statehouse Studies
John Steuart Curry completed these crayon studies for murals in the Kansas Capitol, Topeka. The Kansas Museum of History collections include 19 of Curry's statehouse studies. Crayon studies are small preliminary sketches in preparation for completing a full-sized mural. In 1937, artist John Steuart Curry was asked to return to Kansas to cover the interior walls of the Topeka capitol with scenes from the state's history. The offer followed a statewide newspaper campaign to bring Kansas' most accomplished artist back to his home state. The campaign was initiated by popular Kansas newspaper men such as Jack Harris of the Hutchinson News , Paul Jones of the Lyons Daily News , and even William Allen White of the Emporia Gazette . Just four years later, though, legislators passed a resolution stopping Curry from completing his work. That year Curry left his home state never to return, leaving the finished murals unsigned. John Steuart Curry was born on November 14, 1897, in the small northeastern Kansas town of Dunavent. The eldest of five children in a farming family, his inclination toward art began at a young age. Curry's biographer and friend, Lawrence E. Schmeckebier, once wrote that as a youth on his father's farm Curry was interested in drawing everything . . . horses and fighting animals, railroad engines and trains, pictures of battles from the Revolutionary War, hosts of everyday things about him. He kept a

13th Symposium on Global Change and Climate Variations The 1930s Drought in the U.S. Great Plains: New Perspectives and a Look at Land Surface Responses Henry F. Diaz, NOAA/ERL/CDC, Boulder, CO; and R. S. Webb, J. K. Eischeid, and S. Forman Previous studies have noted that the Dust Bowl drought was characterized by three successive episodes of dryness and above average temperatures, interrupted by about a year or so (in 1932 and 1935) with normal or above precipitation. Studies of the relationship between climate and dune activity in three different climatic zones that are progressively more arid (a cross-section from the western Great Plains through the Chihuahuan desert in southern New Mexico and the Colorado Desert in southeastern California, indicate that aridity, as defined be the ratio of precipitation to potential evapotranspiration is the more critical parameter in comparison with wind strength. We will evaluate the strength of the 1930s Great Plains drought by ranking different measures of drought during that time with the available historical record in the region. We will also compare the strength of 1930s drought with available paleoclimate records, such as tree-rings and geomorphic data. We will also consider the impact of future drought in the region in the context of present day land use practices and other changes in the landscape of the U.S. Great Plains. Selection and training
The Orphan Branch General Miles indirectly blamed the Army's promotion policy for G2's inability to attract talented officers. After the war, he told Congress during the hearings on Pearl Harbor that military intelligence never attracted the numbers of top-quality officers that he would have liked. He acknowledged that, because many of the best officers preferred combat commands, "We did not have a free field for the selection of personnel, and quite rightly. We did the best we could with the personnel and the funds we had available."
Selection and Training
Reality was different. Knight and the upper levels of the Army's intelligence bureaucracy may have thought must have before you can make intelligence plans for the expedition."
I was shown in to General MacArthur. He was seated at his desk, his jacket of a loud rancous [sic] tweed, smoking a cigarette. He looked at me considering, waved me to a chair and began pacing the room back and forth as was his custom when considering a problem, smoking furiously. He stopped in front of me. I rose. "You are very young to be going to Berlin."

    G ENDER AND S OCIETY
"Men have always been afraid that women could get along without them." Margaret Mead In addition to age, gender is one of the universal dimensions on which status differences are based. Unlike sex, which is a biological concept, gender is a social construct specifying the socially and culturally prescribed roles that men and women are to follow. According to Gerda Lerner in The Creation of Patriarchy , gender is the "costume, a mask, a straitjacket in which men and women dance their unequal dance" (p.238). As Alan Wolfe observed in "The Gender Question" ( The New Republic , June 6:27-34), "of all the ways that one group has systematically mistreated another, none is more deeply rooted than the way men have subordinated women. All other discriminations pale by contrast." Lerner argues that the subordination of women preceded all other subordinations and that to rid ourselves of all of those other "isms"racism, classism, ageism, etc.it is sexism that must first be eradicated. For some specifics, see B. Deutsch's " The Male Privilege Checklist ."
