Approximately 5 percent of all UK students attend one of its colleges, which include some of the most prestigious places of study in the world. Many universities in Britain and abroad began life as associate colleges of the university, offering its degrees under licence. In recent years this aspect of the university's work has revived due to the globalisation of the education market, and an increasing number of overseas academic institutes offer University of London diplomas and degrees. The main offices of the University of London are at Senate House in Bloomsbury , which includes a substantial library and the residence of the chancellor.

The former was published in the United States, the latter in the United Kingdom. During the second decade of this century, time use research emerged in Europe in conjunction with early studies of living conditions of the working class in response to pressures generated by the rise of industrialization. In the United States, household time-allocation studies date from 1915. In most of these studies, respondents were asked to estimate how much time they allocated to various activities. The bulk of pre-World War II time use diaries originated in the Soviet Union, Great Britain and the United States. Germany and France were also responsible for a number of others. The first sophisticated study was undertaken in the Soviet Union in 1924 for use in governmental and communal planning. In 1923, the first ever time-budget study in Japan was done in Osaka. In the United States, work began on time-use studies in the 1920's as economists used them to study farm and rural women. Work also began in the 1920's on a program to study household output in terms of time use. Since that time, there has been extensive work focusing on household time use in the United States. Almost all those involved with photography in its early years were artists of some sort or other - either by profession or as a member of a class where a study of art was considered to be a part of the education of any lady or gentleman. It was indeed W. H. F. Talbot's failings at landscape drawing that spurred him into the studies that led to his invention of the Calotype, while the professional Daguerre was looking for an easier means to produce his dioramas, translucent painted depictions of city scenes which altered as they were illuminated from behind, with which he entertained a paying public. An important part of the artists' training was (and often still is) drawing from life models, and the study of the nude has a long and honourable tradition in painting and sculpture. It should thus come as no surprise that the history of photography of the nude is as old as the history of photography itself. Human nature being what it is, it should equally not surprise us that before long there was also of thriving trade in pornography.

American Studies (interdisciplinary)
The interdisciplinary major in American studies is designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop a systematic and in-depth understanding of American culture. By combining American studies courses and courses from relevant disciplines (history, literature, the arts, economics, and the social sciences), students may explore the relationships of diverse aspects of American life. Students also are able to pursue their special interests within American culture by developing an "area of concentration" that provides a specific focus for much of the work completed in fulfillment of major requirements. In addition to introducing students to the field of American studies, the major is designed to help students refine their fundamental intellectual skills, especially their writing and speaking skills. Skills of this sort will serve the student well long after many specific facts, postulates, and theories have been forgotten. In short, as is consistent with Oglethorpe’s stated institutional purpose, the American studies program seeks to prepare humane generalists – individuals who possess those basic qualities so necessary for leadership in a rapidly changing world. The degree awarded is the Bachelor of Arts.

This action by President Spencer triggered protests from the students enrolled in Fisheries and then an inquiry of the situation by Governor Hartley. The conclusion to this affair was that the UW created a Department of Fisheries in the College of Science. This action allowed the fisheries students to complete their degrees in Fisheries. The creation of this new Department also signaled large changes in the direction of Fisheries at the UW. Thompson had earned a reputation as an outstanding scientist, one of the first of the new breed of fisheries biologists. He had conducted pioneering research on the Pacific halibut in British Columbia waters as a graduate student at Stanford University. He became the first director of the California State Fisheries Laboratory, and he was named the initial director of the International Fisheries Commission in 1924. Figure 3. William F. Thompson
(from Stickney 1989). Thompson (Fig. 3) was appointed Research Professor and head of the newly minted Department of Fisheries in May 1930. The appointment was a part-time position, and Thompson remained Director of the Commission. His salary was $2,000 per year. William Thompson was a very focused man, concerned with fine detail. By August of 1931, he had collected his thoughts and wrote to President Spencer with recommendations to revise the curriculum of the Department. Thompson proposed to emphasize basic science and fishery biology (

Alcohol Prohibition Was A Failure
by Mark Thornton Mark Thornton is the O. P. Alford III Assistant Professor of Economics at Auburn University. Executive Summary National prohibition of alcohol (1920-33)the "noble experiment"was undertaken to reduce crime and corruption, solve social problems, reduce the tax burden created by prisons and poorhouses, and improve health and hygiene in America. The results of that experiment clearly indicate that it was a miserable failure on all counts. The evidence affirms sound economic theory, which predicts that prohibition of mutually beneficial exchanges is doomed to failure

    Summary Report 1999
This website provides public access to the published version of Doctorate Recipients from United States Universities: Summary Report 1999 . This report is produced under contract for the National Science Foundation (NSF) and five other Federal agencies (National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Education, The National Endowment for the Humanities, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration) by the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago. Approximately 92 percent of the annual cohort of doctorate recipients in 1999 responded to the questionnaire. Over the decade, though, the response rate ranged from 93 percent in 1988, then increased to 95 percent in 1994, then declined to 92 percent in 1998. Note that most of the numbers presented are actual self-reports, as there are no adjustments for nonresponse. For the nonrespondents, partial data from public sources are added to the file for nonrespondents; therefore, complete counts are presented for conferred doctorates by field of study and sex of recipient. Because some tables present data subject to nonresponse, these summaries represent the conservative known responses for any data item. Therefore, small changes in numbers should be interpreted with caution, as numerical trends are affected by fluctuations in response rates and declines and increases may appear greater than they may be in reality.

Studies in Scarlet The Marriage, Women, and the Law collection is the result of a collaborative project of the Research Libraries Group's law community . This page provides free, demonstration access to it. With a focus on family law and domestic relations in the 19th century, the collection provides scholars throughout the world with electronic access to materials supporting research on a broad range of topics, including marriage, divorce, adultery, miscegenation, polygamy, and birth control. The content of the collection, gleaned from case reports, statutes, novels, newspapers, diaries, and letters, is designed to support scholarship in disciplines including law, history, sociology, political science, women's studies, and criminology. The strength of this collection is the extent, quality, and cohesion of the content. Seven major research institutions in the United States and Great Britain contributed primary and secondary materials:
    • The New York Public Library focused its contribution on materials that document the social conventions and status of women in the 19th century. The New York Public Library also contributed case law from New York courts that played a significant role in establishing critical family law legal precedents in jurisdictions throughout the United States.

One hundred seventy-one studies, ranging from 8 to 20,000 subjects and covering all ages, all ethnic groups, and both sexes, were analyzed by regression, with values weighted by number of subjects in each study. Results show fat intakes
