23. A Chronology Of The SI Metric System
2001 April 09 us stock exchanges finalized the change to decimal trading. The Securities and Exchange Commission has ordered that all stocks must be quoted
http://lamar.colostate.edu/~hillger/dates.htm
A chronology of the SI metric system
Important dates in the history of the modern metric system:
In his book "The Tenth" Simon Stevin suggests that a decimal system should be used for weights and measures, coinage, and divisions of the degree of arc.
Authorities give credit for originating the metric system to Gabriel Mouton, a French vicar, on about this date.
Thomas Jefferson proposed a decimal-based measurement system for the United States.
France's Louis XVI authorized scientific investigations aimed at a reform of French weights and measures. These investigations led to the development of the first "metric" system.
The U.S. Mint was formed to produce the world's first decimal currency (the U.S. dollar consisting of 100 cents).
France officially adopted the metric system.
Napoleon temporarily suspended the compulsory provisions of the 1795 metric system adoption.
The metric system reinstated as the compulsory system in France.
The use of the metric system made legal (but not mandatory) in the United States by the (Kasson) Metric Act of 1866 (Public Law 39-183). This law also made it unlawful to refuse to trade or deal in metric quantities.

The decision to suspend trading in Pakistan was taken on Sunday
Financial market regulators in Pakistan have announced that the country's three stock exchanges will remain closed until next week. The exchanges have not traded since Monday.
The expectation is that after the opening the initial few hours are going to see pretty steep slides
Fahran Bokhari, Financial Times correspondent The initial decision to suspend trading was taken last weekend but markets were expected to re-open on Thursday. Regulators are concerned that when the markets do re-open, heavy selling will take place, prompted by expectations of military retaliation for the terrorist attacks in the US. Following the attacks last Tuesday, the benchmark 100-share index of the Karachi Stock Exchange shed more than 9% as investors rushed to sell their shares. Pakistan has stock markets in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.

What is the Chicago Stock Exchange?
The Chicago Stock Exchange (CHX) provides an auction market for the purchase and sale of equity securities. Like other stock exchanges, it is the physical location where stocks are traded.
The Chicago Stock Exchange currently consists of approximately 200 member organizations (holding 450 seats) and a staff of over 200. It is a self-regulatory organization under the oversight of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
The CHX opened for trading on May 15, 1882. Initially, the 52 stocks and 82 bonds traded at the CHX were mostly regional issues. In 1949, the CHX merged with the St. Louis, Cleveland and Minneapolis-St. Paul exchanges to become the Midwest Stock Exchange (MSE). In 1959, the New Orleans Stock Exchange also merged with the MSE. Chicago's subsequent emergence as the "Exchange Capitol of the World" prompted the CHX to return to its original name on July 8, 1993.

Time Magazine feature by Dr Patrick Dixon 4 April 1999 Archive: a lot has happened since but pattern holds - see update There is an unstoppable drive to create a single pan-European exchange, following the London-Frankfurt alliance last July, and deals by Paris, Madrid, Brussels, Milan, Amsterdam, Zurich, Luxembourg, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Vienna. One virtual market needs only one computer server. New York, London, Frankfurt, Hong Kong and Tokyo are also discussing cooperation. Who needs old stock markets anyway? In 1996, Spring Street Brewing Company raised $1.6 million directly from the Internet. Last year Wit Capital sold initial public offerings in 41 companies via its website. This follows spectacular growth in online investment with an estimated 25% of trades in New York already conducted on the Net by more than 4 million people. Charles Schwab's Net brokerage grew 41% last quarter and has begun its own virtual share issues. Andy Klein, Wit Capital's founder and chief strategist, plans to launch the world's first virtual stock exchange in June, built for $10 million, to trade a limited range of blue chip U.S. stocks out of hours, in real time, with changing prices. Stocks will be quoted initially at closing prices and allowed to float. Wit Capital will list not only high-volume stocks, but also stocks for which price-sensitive information has been released after New York has closed. As confidence and liquidity grow, the number of stocks will increase. By 2003 there could be 20 million online investors in Klein's market-and plenty of competitors.

It traces its origins back to 1792, when a group of brokers met under a tree at the tip of Manhattan and signed an agreement to trade securities. Unlike some of the newer exchanges, the NYSE still uses a large trading floor in order to conduct its transactions. It is here that the representatives of buyers and sellers, professionals known as brokers, meet and shout out prices at one another in order to strike a deal. This is called the "open outcry" system and it usually produces fair market pricing. In order to facilitate the exchange of stocks, the NYSE employs individuals called "specialists" who are assigned to manage the buying and selling of specific stocks and to buy those stocks when no one else will. Specialists and traders use a three-letter ticker symbol in order to identify and trade securities on the exchange. Of the exchanges, the NYSE has the most stringent set of requirements in place for the companies whose stocks it lists. The NYSE requires that all of its companies meet certain minimum listing requirements, including market capitalization, operating cash flow, and earnings. Companies must also provide their shareholders with certain voting rights, and they must have two or more outside directors plus an audit committee. It is important to note, however, that meeting these requirements is by no means a guarantee that the NYSE will list a company; it simply means that the NYSE will consider listing it. The NYSE still examines each company individually to ensure that it is a stable business before it decides to list it.
