When your student watches the news do they know (and understand) where it is happening? Proximity is important—understanding geography helps to explain why Zimbabwe is not much like Moscow, but shares characteristics with Egypt. It is important to understand things and places which are close, and those which are far apart. The horror and sorrow of September 11, 2001 will be with us for a long time. Almost all news now is international news. Our children and students need to know what is happening in their country and their world. The first part of knowing our world, and understanding what will happen now, is to know where places are. It is easy to fail to recognize the humanity of other peoples when we do not even know where they live. American men and women are now fighting far from home; we owe it to them to at least know where they are. Maps are vital to our understanding geography and the world we live in. They can be beautiful and fascinating, but if they are completely unfamiliar it can be difficult to learn from them.

Teaching the 20th-Century History of the United States. ERIC Digest.
It is important to reaffirm the teaching of recent United States history in secondary schools. Diane Ravitch and Chester E. Finn (1987, 84) state this well: "If we think it important that they [17-year-old students of 1986] understand the three decades between the Second World War and their own sixth birthdays [in 1975], we cannot expect this instructional job to be done for them by the daily newspapers or the nightly news; we have to teach this period as the history that it now is." Unfortunately, there are several obstacles to teaching this period of history, including time constraints, student apathy for the subject, and limited help from textbooks. This ERIC Digest (1) examines the coverage of 20th-century United States history; (2) discusses the consequences of limited coverage for student learning; (3) provides ideas on improvement of teaching and learning 20th-century United States history; and (4) lists ERIC resources dealing with all these facets of the topic.

Oral History in the Teaching of U.S. History. ERIC Digest.
Oral history is a stimulating classroom activity and an exciting process designed to increase student involvement in a United States history class and improve student understanding of the historical topic. Further, oral history involves students directly in a method of historical inquiry, which includes the organization and presentation of data acquired directly from another person.
WHY HAVE STUDENTS CONDUCT AN ORAL HISTORY PROJECT?
An oral history project, regardless of the historical topic being investigated or its duration, helps students understand all phases of designing, implementing, and completing an activity. Students of all learning and comprehension levels can use the oral history process to increase their active involvement in the study of United States history. An oral history project is an attempt to preserve a small segment of a relatively recent historical period as viewed through the eyes, experiences, and memories of people who lived during that time. Capturing their experiences and memories on either video or audio tape is invaluable. Over a period of time, memories can fade and those feelings or emotions associated with the events can easily be lost or altered by time.

Pledge of Allegiance On September 8, 1892 a Boston-based youth magazine "The Youth's Companion" published a 22-word recitation for school children to use during planned activities the following month to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America. Under the title "The Pledge to the Flag", the composition was the earliest version of what we now know as the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE. Click on the Scroll to access a larger copy of this image containing the text of the Pledge of Allegiance for printing as a poster. (Set your printer margins to the minimum default to print it as a single, letter-sized page.) The October 12, 1892 Columbus Day celebration of the 400th Anniversary of the discovery of America was planned for years in advance, and anticipated much as modern Americans look forward to and plan for the advent of a new century. The United States had recovered from most of the effects of its Civil War that began 30 years earlier, and people from around the world were flocking to the "Land of Opportunity". The previous year almost a half million immigrants had entered the United States through the Barge Office in Battery Park, New York and on New Years day of 1892 the new Federal Bureau of Receiving's station at Ellis Island had opened. I pledge allegiance to my Flag

Research and Teaching Teaching Opportunities at the University of Chicago The Americanists place particular emphasis on training for teaching. We try to insure that every U.S. history graduate student can work with a faculty member as a teaching intern in at least one quarter of our three-quarter America in Western Civilization course, which is part of the College Core. These internships usually occur during the third year in the program, and are funded as teaching assistantships. The American Civ course is a documents-based discussion course taught in sections of 22-25 students; interns work closely with faculty to plan and conduct discussions and evaluate assignments. A successful internship qualifies graduate students to teach their own independent sections of the course as lecturers; in most years, 5 of the 12 sections of American Civ are taught by advanced graduate students. There are sometimes also opportunities to teach American Civ sections during the summer quarter.

For those who plan ahead, the listings for any day of the year are available. Text, images, and other add-ons vary by day. Grades 5-12 - A very flexible, intriguing unit that allows students to define and trace the evolution of the "American Dream." In groups of four, students each take a different role (photographer, politician, poet, etc.) and research the American Dream from that angle (finding pictures, political events, the "soul" of the Dream, etc.). The unit has a teacher’s page, a student’s page, and a resource page to outline the lesson. On the teacher’s page, you will find many suggestions for customizing the lesson, such as restricting the scope to one particular decade or a certain theme. Conservation at a Crossroads: The Hetch Hetchy Controversy Grades 9-12 - This unit is based on the debate over damming the Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite National Park, which helped mark the evolution of the conservation movement. The unit has two parts: the first details conservation through the rationales of various historical figures, and the second outlines the case study of Hetch Hetchy. The format of the second part includes a mock hearing where students present their researched ideas. In the course of the unit, students will also compare historical ideas of conservation with current ones.

    Teaching Profession
By the late 1830s reformers in education, desiring a more proficient teaching force, instituted rigorous and standardized examinations and pushed states to build training schools to teach educational methods as well as to increase knowledge in subject areas. By the 1920s most northern and western states demanded at least a high school diploma and many required training beyond high school. In southern states, teacher training, like education in general, was segregated, and some African American women entered classrooms with little or no formal training. Initially teaching was viewed as an occupation ideally suited to young women before they married. With the exception of western states, most teachers were young and single until the late 1930s. In the early twentieth century teachers initiated challenges to laws that ejected them from the classroom upon marriage but it was severe teacher shortages during World War II that prompted the repeal of such laws. As a result many more older women are presently teaching. While both age and marital status of women teachers has changed, social class has remained consistent. Most who entered teaching grew up in middle-class white families. For immigrant women and women of color, teaching was a route to the middle class. Not until the end of the nineteenth century were teaching jobs available in large numbers to them.
