Teaching State History and Core Knowledge
When is state history taught in your state? In Texas, state studies are usually taught in grades 4 and 7. However, the attached completed sequence is intended to be used as a school-wide document in grades K-8. The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for grades 4 and 7 are aligned with its corresponding content, demonstrating how teachers can plan Core Knowledge lessons that incorporate Texas History into American and World History. As a result, students have many opportunities for meaningful connections in their learning. We recommend that a school teaches state history all year long as a comparison to American and World history. The alternative is to have a school-wide state theme for a few weeks of school where each grade level focuses upon its designated content. Texas schools have the freedom to modify the attached document to suit their needs. The most important aspect is to have school-wide agreement on how state studies will be taught. This shifts the responsibility for state studies from one grade level to a school-wide effort. Schools outside of Texas may choose to use this document as a model for creating their own state history sequence. If your school develops a sequence that you would be willing to share with others, please contact the Core Knowledge Foundation. Feel free to e-mail

Using Primary Sources in the Classroom
Project Description
This project is designed to help teachers more easily integrate the use of primary source materials into their classrooms. It consists of teaching units on Alabama history organized in ten chronological/subject areas: While these units cover some of the most critical and significant periods in Alabama history, the selected lessons are meant to be representative rather than comprehensive. These units were designed to augment the study of Alabama, yet they are useful in the study of the United States, the world, and the social studies in general. The documents can also be used to supplement the study of other curriculums. Each unit contains background information for the teacher and is made up of several lessons. The lessons contain learning objectives, suggested activities, and documents. Documents are reproduced in the original form and transcribed when necessary. Primary source materials may be printed and reproduced for classroom use. Lessons can be used without modification, adapted for specific class use, or entire new lessons and activities may be created based on the primary source materials provided.
Purpose of the Project
The 1992 Alabama Social Studies Course of Studies emphasized the use of primary source documents to "enrich the social studies program and enable students to visualize and empathize with people of other times and places." These documents help students vividly understand the feelings and actions of Jeremiah Austill at the Canoe Fight of 1813, of riders on the first integrated buses in Montgomery at the conclusion of the famous bus boycott, of women nursing wounded Civil War soldiers, and of destitute Alabama families during the Depression. These documents enrich the study of Alabama history and the study of all civilizations.

http://www.lbl.gov/Science-Articles/Archive/EETD-energy-forecasting.html
December 17, 2002 What can history teach us about forecasts of energy use? Contact: Allan Chen, a_chen@lbl.gov
Energy forecasters underestimate the importance of "surprises" in their forecasts, and this has led many of the major energy forecast studies of the last 50 years to overestimate the amount of energy they predicted the U.S. would be using by the year 2000. A new article by Ashok Gadgil and Jon Koomey, of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and Paul Craig, Professor Emeritus of Engineering at the University of California at Davis, published in the 2002 Annual Review of Energy and the Environment , assesses the success of many of the major long-term energy forecasts published in the United States dating back to the 1960s. "Our basic conclusion," says Koomey, a scientist in the Environmental Energy Technologies Division and leader of Berkeley Lab's End-Use Energy Forecasting Group, "is that forecasters in the 1950 to 1980 period underestimated the importance of unmodeled surprises. One of the most important examples is that they failed to foresee the ability of the United States economy to respond to the oil embargoes of the 1970s by increasing its energy efficiency. Not only were most forecasts of that period systematically high, but forecasters systematically underestimated uncertainties."

Teaching about the Religious Other
National Peace Essay Contest students are given a brief introduction to Islam at the Islamic Center in Washington, DC. (Photo by Bill Fitzpatrick) Summary
  • Prejudice and ignorance about the beliefs and practices of the religious "other" often exacerbate conflicts. Religious stereotypes contribute to misunderstanding and foment animosity.
One antidote to hatred between religious communities is to teach communities about the beliefs and practices of the religious other.
Some countries, such as Indonesia, recognize that the country’s future depends on a celebration of its religious pluralism. It is particularly important that teaching about the religious other be introduced in schools, universities, and seminaries in countries where religious conflict is a significant problem. In instructing about the religious other, instructors need to act as though they are in the presence of the other and to teach the religion as seen from the perspective of the believer.

Should We Be Alarmed by the Results of the Latest U.S. History Test? (Yes)
    By Diane Ravitch
Ms. Ravitch is a historian of education at New York University and a member of the National Assessment Governing Board. On May 9, 2002 , the U.S. Department of Education released the results for the 2001 National Assessment of Educational Progress assessment of U.S. history . It was a good news-bad news report, with more of the latter than the former. The good news was that children in the fourth and eighth grades had improved their performance when compared to a similar assessment given in 1994. The bad news was that the high school seniors had not improved at all, and that their performance was pretty awful. We would like to believe that students grow steadily in their knowledge and skills as they progress through school. This, however, seems not to be the case with U.S. history. The younger students perform considerably better than high school seniors. As the demand for knowledge and skill increases, as test questions become more complex, the proportion of low-performing students also increases.
    The National Assessment Governing Board
(NAGB) has two different ways of reporting on student performance: one is scale scores, measured on a scale from to 500, the other is achievement levels (with varying percentages of students scoring at or above basic, proficient, and advanced). Scale scores are supposed to show what students know and can do; achievement levels establish what students should know and should be able to do at their grade level. Both ways of reporting show the same results.

History Project gets $1M to aid teachers
By Susanne Rockwell Using a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the Sacramento school district will be working closely over the next three years with the UC Davis Area 3 History and Cultures Project. The idea is to boost the skills and knowledge of Grant teachers and, through them, raise student literacy and achievement in history. "Much has been given in terms of grants and funding to literacy, mathematics and science, but there have been few opportunities to fund professional development in the social sciences," said Pat Newsome, associate superintendent of educational services in the Grant district. "These funds will afford my teachers the means to deliver high-quality instruction to students." The funded proposal is called "E Pluribus Unum: Reading, Thinking and Writing in American History." Seasoned secondary teachers have been asked by the UC Davis History Project to plan all of the training and to identify opportunities for campus historians to contribute their expertise. The grant will serve 65 teachers who instruct more than 10,000 students in the 8th and 11th grades within the Grant district.

A Curriculum of United States Labor History for Teachers.
Sponsored by the Illinois Labor History Society
[Table of Contents]
Introduction
The United States has the bloodiest history of labor of any industrialized nation on Earth. It is a story rich in human drama and tragedy. It is also one of progress and hope. This is a resource that teachers of United States history can use to incorporate our rich social and labor history into their courses. Using the ideas employed here teachers will increase student understanding of the American economic system and the important issues we all face as workers today. The concepts and lessons will build on each other so that at the end of the school year the student should have a working knowledge of the importance of labor in society. A guiding theme of this work is how laborers have earned a voice in the workplace and increased their share of the economic pie. Teachers should highlight the stark contrast between today's working environment and the relationship between workers and owners of the past. The scope of United States history has been divided into eleven basic periods. These will correspond with the unit divisions that many modern textbook companies use. In each period the main events and issues of US labor history are introduced. Concepts, ideas and resources are presented to aid the teacher. In several of the units specific lessons are available for immediate use.
