Secrets of Great History Teachers
In these interviews distinguished teachers share their strategies and techniques. Good teaching is more often honored in rhetoric than reality. And great teachers are generally known locally within their own schools, but less often to a larger group of national colleagues. Our goal in this section is, in part, to identify and honor those people who have taught with excellence, dedication, and distinction. But more than that, we believe that these teachers have lessons to offer the rest of us and that there are remarkably few forums for hearing their wisdom. If you would like to recommend a great history teacher, please contact Roy Rosenzweig or Kelly Schrum There are matching records, sorted by date of interview. "From the Great Depression and the New Deal programs to architectural marvels and heroes of fact and fiction, the 1930s stamps portray a time when Americans worked together to overcome great hardship in hopes of a better day," said Deputy Postmaster General Michael Coughlin, who dedicated the stamps, part of the USPS's Celebrate the Century program, at the foot of Cleveland's Terminal Tower. When it opened in June 1930, the 52-story tower was among the tallest buildings in the world. It was the tallest building west of New York for 40 years.

Great Sites For Teaching About... Labor Day and U.S. Labor History
Labor Day is much more than the end of summer. It is a holiday unlike most others, honoring not public figures or war victories but the everyday worker. To commemorate Labor Day, Education World has found some of the best World Wide Web sites about the history of the holiday and labor in the United States. In New York City, on the first Monday in September 1884, the Knights of Labor an early labor organization held a large parade to celebrate working people. Later that decade, labor organizations around the country began to lobby various state legislatures for recognition of Labor Day as an official holiday. In 1887, the first states to declare it a state holiday were Oregon, Colorado, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. In 1894, Congress established Labor Day as a national holiday. The following Web sites can help users teach about Labor Day and the history of the labor movement in the United States.

3. Reframing History Teaching in Secondary Schools:
Some Key Trends
It is still too soon perhaps to accurately assess the burgeoning collaborations around the country. But the items below will give an outline of what seem to be some of the principal trends related to partnerships between historians at schools and colleges.
The History Standards Movement
Following the release of the 1983 report A Nation at Risk , the general public began to become more concerned about what was being learned in schools. Nationwide tests in the late 1980s indicated that U.S. students were far behind their counterparts in almost every other industrialized country in the world. The resulting political fallout led to the Educate America Act of 1994, which set national goals for student learning. The "goal" that had a special impact upon the K–12 curriculums stipulated that students should "leave grades 4, 8, [and] 12 having demonstrated competency over challenging subjects including English, mathematics, science, foreign languages, civics and government, economics, arts, history, and geography."
