  • Public school teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teacher education program, and be licensed.
  • Many States offer alternative licensing programs to attract people into teaching, especially for hard-to-fill positions.
  • Excellent job opportunities are expected as a large number of teachers retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; opportunities will vary somewhat by geographic area and subject taught.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and “hands-on” approaches to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. They utilize “props” or “manipulatives” to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or of addition and subtraction by playing board games. As the children get older, the teachers use more sophisticated materials, such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers. To encourage collaboration in solving problems, students are increasingly working in groups to discuss and solve problems together. Preparing students for the future workforce is the major stimulus generating the changes in education. To be prepared, students must be able to interact with others, adapt to new technology, and think through problems logically. Teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop these skills.

Teaching the Law Using United States Supreme Court Cases. ERIC Digest.
"We are very quiet there, but it is the quiet of a storm centre." These words were used in 1913 by Associate Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. to describe the Supreme Court. Since 1789, the Court has been making decisions that affect all of us. The study of Supreme Court cases, therefore, should be an integral part of civic education. This ERIC Digest discusses (1) constitutional issues and Supreme Court cases that should be taught and (2) effective strategies for teaching them. It also includes a list of national organizations that develop resources to enhance the teaching of Supreme Court cases.
SELECTION OF CONSTITUTIONAL ISSUES AND SUPREME COURT CASES.
When deciding which cases to include in the curriculum, a teacher must choose from hundreds of potential cases. The following criteria can guide decisions about which cases and issues should be included.

The Declaration of Independence is the founding document of the United States of America. It is part of the social studies core
curriculum in schools throughout the United States. Students, by the time they graduate from high school, are expected to know the main ideas in the Declaration of Independence and their significance in the American heritage. This Digest discusses (1) the origins of the Declaration of Independence, (2) the structure and key ideas of the document, (3) how to teach the document, and (4) World Wide Web sites on the document for teachers and learners.
ORIGINS OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE
During June and July of 1776, the main question facing the Second Continental Congress at Philadelphia revolved around independence: should the American colonies represented at this Congress declare their separation and freedom from the United Kingdom of Great Britain? After intense debate, the delegates voted on July 2, 1776 in favor of Richard Henry Lee's resolution for independence. On July 4, the Congress discussed and approved, with a few changes, the formal Declaration of
Independence written by Thomas Jefferson on behalf of a five-person committee appointed by Congress (Maier 1997; McClellan 1989).

What was the name of the ship that brought the Pilgrims to America ? Who wrote the Declaration of Independence? When did the Battle of Gettysburg occur? Far too often these trivia type questions drove my elementary social studies curriculum. Students listened to lectures and read their textbook to find the answers to these types of questions. Their understanding was then measured by the score on the end-of-unit multiple choice or fill-in the-blank test. As expected, the excitement level on the part of the instructor and the students was never very high with this method of instruction. As the focus on standards continued to drive curriculum evaluation, I felt it was time to analyze my fifth grade social studies program in light of these standards. The social studies standards demand that students develop historical perspective, explain historical relationships and the significance of events, and analyze issues that affect the present and the future. They call for students to understand the impact of people, ideas, and events; standards also require that students decide how they feel about key events. I could not say that my students' search for factual answers to trivial questions was meeting these standards.

    New Report Urges Improvement in Teaching Asia Studies Visit the Social Studies Article Archive for more social studies-related content. According to a recent report released by the National Commission on Asia in Schools, a 30-member panel of educators, policy-makers, businessmen, media agents, and civic leaders, many students lack a basic knowledge of Asia, despite the significance of these studies to the United States' economy and culture. Here are some disturbing facts, compiled by the National Commission , on the state of Asia-education in American schools:
    • 25% percent of high school students cannot name the Pacific Ocean as the body of water separating Asia from the United States.
    • 80% of adults cannot identify India as the world's largest democracy.
    • According to the Defense Department, the US is not graduating enough students who are competent in foreign languages, cultures, and international policy to meet the increasing demands their business.
    • Less than 2 percent of all students who study a foreign language in grades K-12 study an Asian language.
    In the wake of this report, many educators believe that Asia-education is in such a despairing state that American schools today are fostering "educational isolationism," the theory that American students in the future will be unprepared to meet challenges of globalization. In recent weeks, this has prompted many policymakers, civic leaders, and media to take a closer look at the state of Asia-education in American schools and its lack of prominence in curricula across the country.
