HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHAT HAPPENED TO THE 56 MEN WHO SIGNED THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE?

With the federal mandate to teach the Constitution over the next two weeks, I thought that this piece would go well, since it involved many of the same men, and the same time-period. S. Mandel Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants Nine were farmers and large plantation owners They were men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured. Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

SPECIAL METHODS OF TEACHING SOCIAL STUDIES
Course Objectives:

Special Methods emphasizes teaching social studies on the secondary level with special reference to the New York State Social Studies curriculum. This course examines and applies subject-specific methods and materials, including the evaluation of student work, for teaching students of varying needs, interests and levels of academic preparation. Conceptualizing, organizing, presenting, and evaluating historical and social science content is particularly important. This course introduces the practical application of each social science in relation to specific curricular demands and also integrates instructional technology through internet sources and computer applications. Mastery of both theoretical concepts and their application in the classroom is essential. Course Requirements: 1. Qualitative discussion of assigned readings and completion of written assignments. 2. Midterm evaluation. 3. Five teaching presentations and related lesson plans. Four of the lessons will be presented in a public school setting. 4. Three observations of your future cooperating teacher's classes and one teaching exercise during finals week. Additional meetings and assistance in preparation for student teaching with your cooperating teacher.

The Teaching American History Grant program is a discretionary grant program funded under Title II-C, Subpart 4 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act awarded by the federal Department of Education. The goal of the program is to support programs that raise student achievement by improving teachers' knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of American history. Districts, higher education institutions, and public history organizations collaborate over a three-year period to ensure that teachers develop the knowledge and skills necessary to teach traditional American history in an exciting and engaging way. The United States, unlike any other nation, is a country of migratory people who arrived in mass over a relatively short period of time. The immigration of people from various lands has created a dynamic everchanging environment for young people to grow up in. Educating an American student for the good life mandates that these young minds be schooled in the laws, customs and ways of people worldwide. Students today live in a world which is so closely linked together by technological advances that the villages of Kenya are a split second from the living rooms of each student in New Haven. The impetus for developing a unit for teaching reading comprehension through Social Studies readings is the result of work with middle School Special Education students who were showing adequate progress in Reading, English and Math. The youths, however, lacked knowledge of the world around them. The students could relate a few facts about the United States and the state of Connecticut, but their need for a broader awareness of the world was obvious. These students also scored well on the word attack section of the Woodcock Reading Mastery Test; however, they fell several years behind in reading comprehension and oral reading fluency. The students also did not perceive Social Studies as a “real” subject. Yet, in order to function in mainstream classes, the student is required to progress in all areas of the curriculum. Thus the marriage of Reading and Social Studies also served as the thrust to wean the Special Education student to the mainstream Social Studies classes.

    Teaching/Assessment Strategies Mrs. McDowell's class will focus on physical wellness issues for the next several weeks. One of the tasks is to create a physical fitness program for 6th grade teachers. To accomplish the task, students can choose the most appropriate strategy from those Mrs. McDowell has modeled, such as writing questions for interviewing fitness professionals, working on a group investigation, or developing a flowchart for the program. Introduction T he Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA) charges schools with the task of providing students with the necessary tools for lifelong learning. Students who possess a variety of methods to approach learning will have a greater chance of becoming independent, "strategic" learners. As students learn differently and their needs vary, using only on instructional strategy is not sufficient. Teachers can use strategies to help students learn, assess the degree of learning, and determine how well a learner has transferred the strategy into a personal learning tool. The learning environment must take students beyond rote learning into a level of discovery and exploration.

ABSTRACT Middle and high school social studies teachers in 48 states were surveyed to learn if and how they taught about the impeachment of President Clinton. Those who taught about the impeachment felt confident in handling the material and were positive about the experience. Some expressed an obligation to students or a requirement to teach the topic as a necessity of being a teacher of social studies. Most who taught about impeachment stressed the process and legal concepts or made historical comparisons with previous presidential impeachments. Most teachers who chose not to teach about the impeachment did so because the topic was not related to the content emphasis of their course or because they believed the personal issues in the case were not appropriate for the age group they taught. Questions and implication for the social studies curriculum, current issues, and the media are discussed
