The Battle of Midway, fought near the Central Pacific island of Midway, is considered the decisive battle of the war in the Pacific. Before this battle the Japanese were on the offensive, capturing territory throughout Asia and the Pacific. By their attack, the Japanese had planned to capture Midway to use as an advance base, as well as to entrap and destroy the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Because of communication intelligence successes, the U.S. Pacific Fleet surprised the Japanese forces, sinking the four Japanese carriers, that had attacked Pearl Harbor only six months before, while only losing of one carrier. After Midway, the Americans and their Allies took the offensive in the Pacific. Background to the Battle of Midway Following the outbreak of the Pacific War in December 1941, the Japanese armed forces conducted military operations against U.S., British Commonwealth, and Dutch possessions in the Pacific and Southeast Asia. The first phase of these operations, which was the seizure of Malaysia, Singapore, the Dutch East Indies, the Philippines, and various island groups in the central and western Pacific, was virtually complete by March 1942. The second phase, initiated by Japanese Imperial Headquarters on 23 January, was designed to isolate and neutralize Australia and India. In the Pacific, this plan envisioned the seizure of bases in Papua/New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, which would be used to support future operations against New Caledonia, Fiji, and Samoa. By early March, with the seizure of Lae and Salamaua, the entire north coast of Papua/New Guinea had fallen to Japanese forces who were planning for an amphibious invasion of Port Moresby.

The Oregon Territory
Along with territorial disputes with Spain and Mexico over the Southwest, the fate of the Oregon Territory was one of the major diplomatic issues of the first half of the 19th century. The territory became a focus of those who believed that it was the United States’ obligation and right to extend its rule and liberties across the North American continent. The Oregon Territory stretched from the Pacific coast to the Rocky Mountains, encompassing the area including present-day Oregon, Washington, and most of British Columbia. Originally Spain, Great Britain, Russia, and the United States claimed the territory. In 1819, under terms of the Transcontinental Treaty, Spain ceded its claims to the territory to the United States. Shortly thereafter the United States contested a unilateral Russian move to grant its citizens a fishing, whaling, and commercial monopoly from the Bering Straits to the 51st parallel. In 1823 President Monroe promulgated his doctrine, which put Russia on notice that the United States did not accept Russian attempts at monopoly. The U.S. claim was based on the explorations of Lewis and Clark and on the establishment of trading posts set up by John Jacob Astor’s Pacific Fur Company, such as Astoria at the mouth of the Columbia River. Great Britain based its claim, in part, on James Cook’s exploration of the Columbia River.

From the early 1800s to the late 20th century, Asian and Pacific peoples have played a vital role in the development of the United States and made lasting contributions in all elements of American society. The month of May is recognized as National Asian-Pacific Heritage Month. This year, as part of the celebration, we are showcasing the rich heritage of Micronesia by highlighting the islands' listed historic places. Join the National Register in commemorating just a few of the places where Asian and Pacific people have made history. Today, Guam remains a territory of the United States. In the 1970s, citizens of the old Trust Territory organized four new governments: the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the RMI, and the Republic of Palau. Of these, the Marianas are an American Commonwealth and the other three are in a unique relationship with the United States known as "Free Association."

U.S. APPROVES $2 MILLION FOR PRIOR TRUST TERRITORY SERVICE By Bernadette H. Carreon For Variety KOROR, Palau (August 20, 2002 - Palau Horizon/Marianas Variety)-The U.S. House of Representative has included $2 million for the Prior Service Benefits Trust Fund in the fiscal year 2003 appropriation for the U.S. Department of the Interior, according to David Cohen, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Insular Affairs. The Prior Service funding benefits over 2,000 former employees of the U.S. Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, which consisted of Palau, the Northern Marianas, the Marshall Islands and what is now called the Federated States of Micronesia. The Association of Pacific Island Legislature earlier urged the U.S. government to appropriate funds for the Prior Service Trust Fund. The U.S. had promised to supplement the $8 million initial funding it allocated for the Prior Service in 1986. Two years ago, the U.S. Congress appropriated $700,000 for the trust fund and reiterated its promise to further fund the program. However, Prior Service will soon run out of funds and its 2,250 members may no longer receive their checks.

AMERICA'S HALF-FORGOTTEN FORMER TRUST TERRITORY OF THE PACIFIC ISLANDS By Colin Woodard UMAN, Federated States of Micronesia (December 27, 1999 – The Christian Science Monitor)-Sixty years ago, residents of this small tropical island had access to electricity, running water, paved roads, good schools, competent health care, and a regular ferry service to the main town on a nearby island of the Chuuk archipelago. But after 40 years as a U.S. trust territory - and another 15 years of U.S.-funded development - Uman has none of these things. The roads built by the Japanese before World War II have been reduced to slender footpaths. Japanese-era industrial machinery rusts in the jungles, and shrubs grow on the main dock. With no jobs and no future, young men drift to the district center, Weno, where many regularly drink themselves into a violent rage, then attack anyone or anything around them. The neglected, supply-starved hospital has such a poor reputation that even those seriously injured in attacks prefer not to be treated. All this in a nation of 130,000 that has received more than $1.3 billion in U.S. grants - $ 10,000 per person - over the past 13 years.

Source: World Encyclopedia of Flags The Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands was a United Nations trusteeship in the North Pacific administerd by the United States. The territory consisted of islands originally controlled by Germany and ceded to Japan following World War I. Following the second World War, the islands were placed under U.N. control (1947). The trust was dissolved when the last island group, Palau, approved a free association trade agreement with the United States in 1980. The stars in the flag represented the Mariana Islands Marshall Islands Ponape Truk ... Yap , and Palau The flag was authorized by the U.N. High Commissioner and adopted by the Congress of Micronesia in July 1965. It became official on 19 August 1965. The flag has ceased to be used following the dissolution of the Trust. According to "The Flag Book of the United States" by Whitney Smith (1975), The flag design was first hoisted on 24 October 1962, but was not officially adopted by the Congress of Micronesia, as the legislature of the Trust Territory was called, until 1965. The six stars represented the districts of Yap, Truk, Ponape, Marianas, Marshalls, and Palau.

Historical Timeline of Events Leading to the formation of Washington State Early Washington Maps: A Digital Collection is the product of a partnership between the University of Washington Libraries Map Collections and Washington State University's Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections. The maps of this collection have been drawn solely from the collections of these two institutions and are widely varied, ranging from large-scale geographical maps to small hand-drawn sketches of settlements. In the time period spanned by this project, the Pacific Northwest went from being considered "parts as yet unknown" to being the subject of literally thousands of maps concerned with geography, transportation, climate, population, cultures, politics, tourism, and other topics. This timeline presents a small portion of those maps in a historical perspective. The maps chosen are not necessarily from the noted date, but are instead picked to represent the events of that date. In keeping with the wide spectrum of maps to choose from, some of the maps will provide a general overview of the event in question, while some will be relevant only to one small example of the item. For further maps related to a given event or date, please search the database using either the event or date as keywords. 10,000 to 40,000 BC:
