Tourism and the growing military presence on the island are the bedrock of its economy. OVERVIEW
FACTS
LEADERS MEDIA Guam is an important staging post, allowing rapid access to potential flashpoints in the Koreas and in the Taiwan Strait. The largest military installation, Andersen Air Force Base, was used by B-52 bombers during the Vietnam War in the early 1970s. Nuclear attack submarines are based on the island. Visitors from Japan are the mainstay of the tourist industry. Away from the resorts and shopping malls, coral reefs and waterfalls are among the natural attractions. But Guam's birdlife has been decimated by the brown tree snake, accidentally introduced in the 1940s. Guam is home to several US attack submarines Guam has a diverse population, which includes Japanese, Chinese, and incomers from other Pacific islands. The indigenous Chamorro are a people of mixed Micronesian, Spanish and Filipino descent.

But the Kyrgyz defence minister said that once the situation improved, US forces would no longer need to stay on. US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is on a tour of Central Asia - a trip said to be in response to pressure on the US to withdraw from bases in the region. About 1,000 US soldiers are stationed in Kyrgyzstan, and the US also has an airbase in neighbouring Uzbekistan. These bases are a vital hub for ferrying supplies to US forces in Afghanistan, and providing refuelling services for US aircraft. Urgent mission The Pentagon negotiated the use of airfields in Central Asia four years ago, to support the war in Afghanistan.

The move extended American influence deep into the territory of the former Soviet Union.

of Guam
Background:
Guam is the southernmost and largest island of the Marianas Island Archipelago in the North Pacific. With Magellan's landing on Guam in 1521 Spain's reign began which lasted almost 4 centuries. In 1898 America claimed the island from Spain as part of the prizes in the Spanish-American War. Captured by the Japanese in 1941, it was retaken by the US three years later. The military installation on the island is one of the most strategically important US bases in the Pacific.
The economy of Guam depends on tourism, US military spending, and the export of fish and handicrafts.

[text adapted from the Census Bureau's Geographic Areas Reference Manual (GARM)] American Samoa American Samoa is an unorganized, unincorporated territory of the United States. It consists of five major volcanic islands and two coral atolls (see Figure 1) that lie in the heart of Polynesia, 2,500 miles south-southwest of Honolulu and 1,800 miles north-northeast of New Zealand. It is the only U.S. jurisdiction that lies south of the equator. Tutuila Island, which contains the historic capital of Pago Pago, the seat of government at Fagatogo, and the office of the Governor at Utulei, encompasses 70 percent of American Samoa's 77.3 square miles and over 95 percent of its 46,773 inhabitants (see Figure 1). In 1839, the visit of an American naval vessel marked the first official United States contact with this area. In 1872, the need for a coaling station brought about an agreement between the commander of the U.S. naval vessel Narragansett and the chief of Pago Pago; although the agreement was never ratified by the U.S. Senate, it prevented other nations from making claims on Pago Pago Harbor as international competition for bases in the South Pacific increased.

Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry Hawaii and the Pacific Islands are national and global treasures of biological diversity. The wide geographic range and thousands of isolated island ecosystems across the Pacific have led to an extremely high diversity of flora and fauna. As the most isolated archipelago on earth, 90% of Hawaii's 10,000 native species are endemic. On some islands climatic gradients range from mangrove swamps to desert to rain forest to alpine communities in the span of less than 20 miles. The forests of the pacific are sources of freshwater, subsistence, wood, recreational, and aesthetic and cultural values. Just as the scale of diversity on the Pacific islands is befitting that of a continent so are there a disproportionate number of threats to the island ecosystems. Among the most significant of threats are invasive species. Through our research and technical outreach programs we are improving our understanding of Pacific Island forests, the threats to their sustainability, and approaches to their restoration.

ABOUT THE PACIFIC WAR HISTORICAL SOCIETY AND THE PACIFIC WAR WEB-SITE THE PACIFIC WAR HISTORICAL SOCIETY The Pacific War Historical Society came into existence in 2003. It is closely linked to the Pacific War Web-site and the companion Battle for Australia Web-site. The society is still in the formative stage, but has members in North America, Australia, Asia, and Europe. The only qualifications for membership are access to the internet and a strong interest in the Pacific War and its historical setting. There is no fee for membership. Members include veterans of the Pacific War, historians, teachers, admirals, generals, history students, and anyone who simply has a deep interest in the Pacific War and the Battle for Australia 1942-43. Contact is maintained with and between members by means of email and an occasional emailed newsletter. It is anticipated that the newsletter will be circulated more frequently by 2006 and hopefully, contain members contributions and correspondence. If you would be interested in joining us, could you tell me a little about your background and interests (not for publication).

    ©Mr. Daniel H. MACMEEKIN
The territories of Guam, the United States Virgin Islands, and American Samoa, and the Commonwealths of Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands are the principal overseas dependencies of the United States. All are islands (or groups of islands), and each is economically less developed than any State of the United States. The United States also asserts sovereignty over, and administers, a number of mostly tiny islands: Howland, Baker, and Jarvis Islands; Kingman Reef; and Johnson, Palmyra, Wake, and Midway Atolls, all in the Pacific; and Navassa Island in the Caribbean. These islands, which do not have permanent populations, are often referred to as "possessions". Linked to the United States by "Compacts of Free Association" are the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau. Each of these "freely associated states" retains national sovereignty—indeed, each is a member of the United Nations—but maintains a close economic and security relationship with the United States through the Compacts. Because of their sovereign status, the freely associated states are not further treated in this article.
