  • Bureau of Economic Analysis

  • BEA's economic accounts - national, regional, and international - provide estimates, analyses and projections on such key issues as economic growth, regional development, and the nation's position in the world economy. Business price indexes
A review of business price indexes – the Producers Price Index, Capital Goods Price Index, and Farm Expenses Price Index – was undertaken during May 2002. It covered the current and extended uses of the indexes, their scope, accuracy and timeliness, the extent to which existing methods and data sources met required standards, and the extent to which the index systems and capability needed strengthening. The recommendations are currently being considered.

Business Practices Survey
In June 2001, Statistics New Zealand conducted a Business Practices Survey to measure the use of information technology, the level of innovation, and the uptake of modern management practices by businesses in New Zealand. The survey was developed with the support of the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology. The report on the survey, Information Technology Use in New Zealand, was published in May 2002.

Sub-annual economic statistics redevelopment
The redesign of the Economic Survey of Manufacturing was successfully concluded with the introduction of the redeveloped survey in the June 2001 quarter and the subsequent release of the first results from the new series in December 2001.

Economic and business statistics
Business price indexes
Further development of the Producers Price Index (PPI) has begun in order to address the major deficiencies unresolved in the previous development round. Initially, the work will focus on adjusting for quality change, particularly in the service industries, and assessing the representativeness and coverage of the prices collected. This continues the drive for continuous improvement in the quality of the indexes. The PPI is an important measure of price change as it affects New Zealand businesses, and because its components are used as a deflator for calculating real GDP, robust measures of price change are essential for monitoring economic growth and measuring changes in productivity.

Retail Sales Indicator series
The Retail Sales Indicator (RSI) was introduced as an experimental series in March 2000 to provide a more timely estimate of change in monthly retail sales. Statistics New Zealand indicated at the time that the RSI’s performance would be reviewed after 12 months. In view of public criticism of the reliability of the series, the review was conducted after eight months of publication, following publication in December 2000 of a discussion paper on the performance of the RSI, its fitness for use, and its limitations. Submissions were sought from users of the measure and, based on that consultation, it was decided to discontinue the series after March 2001.
