Goods and Services Deficit Decreases in July 2005
Goods and Services
  • Exports increased to $106.2 billion in July from $105.8 billion in June. Goods were $74.9 billion in July, up from $74.5 billion in June. Services were virtually unchanged at $31.3 billion in July.
    Imports decreased to $164.2 billion in July from $165.3 billion in June. Goods were $137.5 billion in July, down from $138.3 billion in June, and services were $26.7 billion in July, down from $27.0 billion in June.
    For goods, the deficit was $62.6 billion in July, down from $63.8 billion in June. For services, the surplus was $4.6 billion in July, up from $4.3 billion in June.
Goods by Category
  • The June to July change in exports of goods reflected increases in industrial supplies and materials ($0.3 billion); capital goods ($0.2 billion); automotive vehicles, parts, and engines ($0.1 billion); and consumer goods ($0.1 billion). Decreases occurred in other goods ($0.4 billion) and foods, feeds, and beverages ($0.1 billion).
    The June to July change in imports of goods reflected decreases in consumer goods ($0.8 billion) and capital goods ($0.7 billion). Increases occurred in industrial supplies and materials ($0.5 billion); automotive vehicles, parts, and engines ($0.1 billion); and other goods ($0.1 billion). Foods, feeds, and beverages were virtually unchanged.

  • This is a free database on the web, but you do have to register (make up a unique username and password). The interface uses HTML forms to guide you through the data collection process. You can get greatly aggregated or disaggregated data , or levels in between. You can download the data in several popular formats to import into spreadsheets. You can get both value (dollars) and quantity data You can get data classified by either SITC or Harmonised classification systems. You can get monthly, quarterly, or annual data
Limitations
  • It's availability to the public is theoretically just a pilot project, although it's been available for over six months so far. It only provides data on imports to and exports from the United States.
