http://geography.usgs.gov/
The USGS conducts science for a changing world. USGS Geography monitors the changes that occur on the land surface using remote sensing, studies the connections between people and those changes, and then provides individuals and society with information they can use to cope with the consequences of those changes. Land changes can be very gradual or sudden. They can be natural such as forest regrowth after a lightning-caused fire or a volcanic eruption. They can also be caused by human action such as converting forestland to residential land. Sometimes, the consequences of natural processes are magnified because of human action such as when debris flows that might have harmed a forest, now harm a neighborhood. Geography’s main challenges are:
  • To understand coupled human environmental systems in the face of land change
  • To deliver pertinent information on the vulnerability and resilience of these systems for decisionmaking
Geography is a bridging, integrating, and synthesizing science. We combine our talents with scientists in other disciplines to make a difference as we improve people’s ability to prosper as the land changes.

An Abridged History of the USA
This book, published online, covers a period of 207 years of U.S. History. It starts with the ratification of the Constitution and ends with the 1996 Presidential Campaign. It has some pictures and links to other sites which provide supporting/additional information. Very interesting!
Academy of Achievement
The Academy of Achievement brings you pictures and stories of "legendary achievers" of the 20th century in areas such as arts, public service, sports, and science. It’s a diverse and interesting group. There’s also a section where you can hear achievers tell how important qualities such as passion and vision have been to them. (Slow, but there is a low bandwidth version.)
The Age of King Charles V (1338-1380)
The Bibliotheque Nationale de France presents this large site containing historical information of the King Charles V period. It's organized well, with access to many documents, manuscripts, and works of art. Available in English and French.

Click on the name of the data provider to jump to their website (external links). If your organization has registered with GBIF, but you do not see your resources listed here, please email Nichole Kallas at nkallas@usgs.gov. There is a lag between display with GBIF and NBII. If a data provider service (at the institution) has been "stopped" or deactivated, the records will not be searchable through NBII's portal. NBII's DiGIR search is a decentralized search, querying each data provider as the search is requested.
