Episcopal Rift
August 1, 2003 Episode no. 648
Current Stories Vatican Seminary Reviews Rebuilding Communities After Katrina Hurricane Katrina: Sacred Objects Headlines: This Week in Religion News
BOB ABERNETHY , anchor: The debate over gay marriage heated up on several fronts this week. The Vatican launched a new global campaign against same-sex unions, saying homosexual behavior is "against the natural moral law." In a new 12-page document, Vatican officials told Catholic politicians that support of same-sex unions is "gravely immoral." The document also opposed adoptions by gays.
In Washington, President Bush weighed in on the subject. At a Rose Garden press conference, the president urged tolerance for gays. But he also supported the traditional view of marriage.
Meanwhile, more and more gay American couples are heading to Canada to get married. Two Canadian provinces legalized gay marriage in June. But the U.S. public remains conflicted about the issue. As we reported last week, a poll by the Pew Forum conducted at the end of June showed that opposition to gay marriage dropped 10 percent since 1996. However, a new CNN-USA TODAY-Gallup poll found that an increasing number of Americans, almost half, believe homosexual acts should be illegal. The U.S. Episcopal Church is locked in a battle over a similar issue not gay marriage, but the blessing of same-sex unions. It's part of a critical showdown over gay issues that many fear could lead to a major church split. Nearly 800 local church representatives and 300 bishops arrived in Minneapolis this week for the denomination's 10-day-long triennial convention. At the top of their agenda: whether to confirm the church's first openly gay bishop, and whether to develop liturgies to bless same-sex unions. Conservatives say movement on either front will provoke "a dramatic realignment" in the Episcopal Church and in the worldwide Anglican Communion. Kim Lawton reports.

Episcopal Church Update
July 2, 2004 Episode no. 744
Current Stories Vatican Seminary Reviews Rebuilding Communities After Katrina Hurricane Katrina: Sacred Objects Headlines: This Week in Religion News BOB ABERNETHY, anchor: One year after the Episcopal Church USA affirmed its first openly gay bishop, that denomination also remains painfully divided over issues of homosexuality. Pro-gay votes at last year's General Convention provoked huge controversy within the U.S. Church and within the 70-million-member worldwide Anglican Communion, of which the Episcopal Church is a part. Church leaders have been looking for a way to resolve the rift, but schism is still a strong possibility. Kim Lawton has our update.
KIM LAWTON: Fifteen years ago, a seminary dean told Michael Hopkins that because he was so open about being gay, he would most likely never become a parish priest in the U.S. Episcopal Church. Today, the Reverend Michael Hopkins is rector of St. George's Episcopal Church in Glenn Dale, Maryland, and on June 12, his union with longtime partner John Bradley was publicly blessed in the church.
Reverend MICHAEL HOPKINS (Rector, St. George's Episcopal Church): Fifteen years later, not only to be a parish priest, but to be able to celebrate my relationship in my parish, with my parishioners, and with my bishop is just an amazing journey.

It periodically has weekly classes where the local Jamaican leadership can leave their family, jobs and churches, study the Scriptures and return for the next 2-3 months to work in their churches before the next session begins. Saturday afternoon classes are being phased in and will be taught by capable Jamaican leadership and will be conducted in a timelier manner of 15 weeks of 2 hour classes. For those desiring full time studies for a fast track to a Bachelor degree, we highly recommend Windward Island School of Evangelism in St. Vincent or Winston-Salem Bible College in North Carolina. Weddings and other services to mark special occasions of life can be arranged with the lay leader. Our services of worship can be viewed as a celebration of our deepest values. We see our religious beliefs as relevant to all aspects of life including the wider community. Over half the time our Sunday services are conducted by our lay leader, and consist of a sermon, music, hymn-singing, readings, prayer and meditation. We also enjoy a wide variety of perspectives from visiting speakers who range from Atheists to Buddhists, Presbyterians to Pagans. The Wednesday evening service is more informal and innovative. All visitors and enquirers are made most welcome and are invited to join us for coffee and a chat after the service.
Activities
An after-service discussion, on a pre-arranged topic, is held once a month.

The True Jesus Church... My Church...
Her History The True Jesus Church was set up in 1917 in northern China with Peking as its centre. Three of the early workers, Paul Wei, Lingsheng Chang and Barnabas Chang, once affiliated with other denominations, received the Holy Spirit and the revelation of the perfect Truth concerning salvation. Under divine instruction, they set up the True Church and began to preach the complete Gospel. Missionaries were sent and gospel newsletters were published and distributed to provinces of China. The power of God accompanied the early stage of development. Many believers received the Holy Spirit, and countless number of people were healed of their illnesses. In 1926, the Church established her headquarters in Nanking, China. Periodic national conferences were held, as the need arose. Meantime, the Church sent her workers to the neighbouring countries of Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaya (Malaysia) and Indonesia. They reached the distant shores of Hawaii as early as 1930. Powerful spiritual manifestations followed these missionaries in their tracks. Following the establishment of the Communist Government in China in 1949, the headquarters was moved to Taiwan. Under the guidance of God, the Church developed rapidly and soon she became one of the largest Christian churches on the island of Taiwan. The churches from overseas, particularily South-East Asia, prospered. The urgent need for church coordination and world evangelism saw the formation of the International Assembly of The True Jesus Church in 1967.

The Anglican Church
The Anglican Church is divided into regional groupings called " dioceses ". Each diocese has its own bishop (or bishops), who have the overall responsibility for the spiritual well-being and administration of the churches within the area.
The Anglican Church of Canada
In Canada more than 800,000 Anglicans worship in 30 dioceses, from Vancouver Island to St. John's, Newfoundland, and from the country's southernmost point to the Arctic Circle. The Most Rev. Andrew Hutchison is the head (called the "Primate") of the national church. The Anglican Church of Canada supports churches in large urban areas, small rural villages, and in remote northern regions. In addition to English, worship is conducted in many other languages, including French, Spanish, Cantonese, Japanese, Mandarin, as well as Indigenous languages. search site map web site corrections general website inquiries Page managed by: Web Site Team
