Subject: US Churches call for UN monitors, disarming of civilians in East Timor
Date: Fri, 12 Feb 1999 17:58:46 -0500
From: "John M. Miller" <fbp@igc.apc.org NCC calls for disarming of civilians and the sending of UN monitors to East Timor Dr. Joan Brown Campbell, General Secretary of the National Council of Churches issued an appeal on February 11 for the disarming of civilians and the sending of UN monitors to East Timor. February 11, 1999 The Honorable Madeleine Albright Secretary of State U.S. Department of State Washington, D.C. 20520 Dear Secretary Albright: We are writing you to express our deep concern about the current situation in East Timor. We welcome the recent announcement by the Indonesian government that they may now consider independence an option for East Timor. However, reports that the Indonesian military has provided arms to residents of that territory and created para-military groups, are completely at odds with the framework of governance being discussed under United Nations auspices. We understand from reliable sources as well as via the media that the sense of insecurity and level of tension among the people of East Timor has increased and that potential for further violence is great. In order for the human rights of the people of East Timor to be preserved and protected and new arrangements for governance be explored in a climate of calm and careful planning, we believe it is important for the international community to take immediate action.

June 30, 2005 To our sisters and brothers in all the classes and churches of the RCA: Grace and peace be with you, in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The officers and delegates of the 199th General Synod of the RCA greet you. We have lived together for seven days. We have laughed and cried, listened and deliberated, worshiped and prayed, seeking God's wisdom, at times in the midst of deep pain and significant disagreement. We have tasted our unity around our mission as we embraced specific objectives for congregational revitalization and church multiplication, the key initiatives of Our Call, the RCA's ten-year goal. These will stretch and challenge us as we hold ourselves accountable to "follow Christ in mission." We have also attempted to hear the concerns of the whole church on the issue of homosexuality. Together, we have experienced deep pain in relation to the trial of the Rev. Dr. Norman Kansfield. In that process we all have been faced with our own sinfulness and our need for forgiveness. Our days together have shown us again that deciding how to respond to issues of sexuality in today's North American context while being faithful to our traditional views of spirituality and the gospel is a complex and difficult task, one of profound significance for our witness together to the Gospel of our Lord Jesus.

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE 2004
FROM THE WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES GENERAL SECRETARY
This wall painting is a copy of a fresco in El Adra, the church of the Virgin Mary,
at the monastery of Deir Es-Sourian, Wadi Natrun, Egypt.
The insciption, in Syriac, is verse 14 of the second chapter of Luke:
"Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom God favours!" (c) IFAO 1982
"…in him was life, and the life was the light of all people.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it."
John 1:4-5
The good news of Christmas shines forth upon the world like the summer sun in the southern hemisphere, like a sparkling star in the wintry northern sky. It shines brightly as "good news of great joy" in a world that surrounds us with disturbing news. It renews our faith in the promise of peace on earth, and calls us once again to praise God whose glory extends to the highest heavens. For centuries, the hope of peace inherent in Christmas has been a central affirmation of the church's faith. Each time that we celebrate the birth of Christ, we commit ourselves to live out this hope. We celebrate the hope of Christmas as the promise of peace. We recall the birth of Jesus who came to us as a child threatened by violence, as a refugee whose family fled due to the ambitions of the powerful. In this season, in this world, we offer our thanks and praise to God for the hope we have in Jesus Christ, for the gift of God's love revealed in human vulnerability.

U.S. Church Leaders Against War on Iraq to Meet Pope John Paul II, Other Church, Government Leaders in Rome Feb. 26 - 27
WASHINGTON - February 25 - Feb. 26-27 in Rome, U.S. church leaders seeking alternatives to war with Iraq are scheduled to meet with Pope John Paul II, the Vice President of the Italian Congress and Italian church leaders. The group carries a plea from the National Council of Churches USA (NCC) and Pax Christi USA that the Pope come to New York to address the U.N. Security Council on his opposition to the war. Acknowledging his frail health, they express their "desperation" and write, "(E)levating your moral voice could make all the difference ... in helping the U.S. pull back from the brink of war." This mission is the fourth organized by the NCC to European members of the Security Council. Earlier delegations met with German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in Berlin, British Prime Minister Tony Blair in London and the French Foreign Ministry in Paris. A fifth delegation to Moscow March 3-5 has an appointment with Russia's President Vladimir Putin.

ACNS ACO 30 JUNE 2005 Church Leaders call for Action on Poverty London Forum on G-8
Wednesday 29 June 2005 [ACNS Special Report by Robert Bergner, Communications Intern] A Forum of church leaders from around the world has called for decisive action and a firm commitment on poverty eradication from the G8 leaders.
"There is no place for apathy in a world which sees 30,000 children die each day because of poverty related conditions. The bible teaches that whatever we do to the poorest we do also for Jesus. We believe God judges nations by what they do to the poorest." The communiqué calls upon G-8 leaders to "provide courageous and costly leadership by providing the resources and making the structural changes necessary to eradicate poverty." Archbishop Rowan underscored the "deep convergence" of churches from North America, Europe and the Global South regarding the issue of extreme poverty. Churches of all traditions, he said, have found that they have a "common moral base resting on the bible" which calls them to act for economic justice. The Archbishop also observed that the eradication of poverty is a "generational issue". It is, he said, "the moral cause of the younger generation whose moral vision must be affirmed."
