McCullough, Executive Director, Church World Service (center) and the Rev. Dr. Robert W. Edgar, General Secretary, National Council of Churches (right). Dandala, 51, a South African who in September became General Secretary of the Nairobi, Kenya-based All Africa Conference of Churches, does not mince words when he describes Africa’s daunting challenges of "tragic poverty," "HIV/AIDS and other killer diseases" and "conflict brought by political despots." But he doesn’t stop there. "Sometimes when people see the wars that continue to afflict us, they don’t see the positive things," he says - "a continent trying to deal with its problems" and the enormous potential of Africa’s churches to "equip, empower and protect the people." Dandala, known for his work in conflict resolution at the height of the apartheid era in South Africa, is the immediate past Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa. He led a World Council of Churches "Living Letters" delegation to the United States in November 2001, meeting with delegates to the NCC’s annual General Assembly among others to wrestle together with questions raised by the attacks of September 11, 2001.

KOBIA CHALLENGES NORTH AMERICAN CHURCHES
TO REFLECT GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE
"If it was the challenge to US churches in 1965 to reflect a global
perspective rather than that of an ultra-patriotic 'culture club', this
remains a principal challenge 40 years later," World Council of Churches
(WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia told a gathering of US Christians on 26 July. Speaking at the general assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Portland, Oregon, Kobia was recalling a 40-year-old, but still relevant insight from a former WCC general secretary from the US, Eugene Carson Blake. Commenting on today's world-wide fears regarding US policies like the doctrine of pre-emptive war, and the current US administration's reluctance to support international initiatives against global warming, or the Millennium Development Goals, Kobia said that the role of the churches is

September 22: Reinforcements
Rev. Martha Munson arrived Tuesday evening to begin to offer some pastoral care to the Gulf Coast congregation. Approximately one quarter of this fellowship lost their homes to Katrina and another quarter have family members who lost their homes. Although all but one of the members have been contacted and all are OK, some have left the area and it is uncertain if and when they will return. Efforts are continuing to find the one member the congregation has not been able to reach. Add this to the normal stressors of life, illness, marital problems, financial worries, etc., and you have one fragile congregation. One member aptly describes them as "hanging on by their fingernails." While much of the media attention has focused on New Orleans, communities on the Mississippi Gulf Coast such as Bay St. Louis, Waveland, and Pass Christian were equally impacted. In fact, many of these communities were wiped off of the map entirely. Entire neighborhoods have been reduced to sticks and foundations. Members of this congregation describe turning down streets to check on a friend and finding nothing but rubble or going to a store and finding it gone. Their entire reality has shifted. One member described feeling like she was far away from home because nothing she sees is familiar to her anymore.

NEW YORK (UMNS) Results of the most extensive survey of congregational life ever conducted in the United States were released March 13.
"Faith Communities in the U.S. Today" has been produced over a five-year period by a coalition known as Faith Communities Today (FACT). The survey of local churches, mosques and synagogues has been funded in part by the Lilly Endowment of Indianapolis.
Co-directors of the project are David Roozen and Carl Dudley, faculty members at Hartford (Conn.) Seminary and leaders in the school's Institute for Religion Research.
During a press conference at the Greek Orthodox Holy Trinity Cathedral, Dudley noted that congregations "are reporting their own vitality and their aliveness. They feel good about themselves in this survey.
"Overall, the survey provides a very upbeat window on faith communities today," he said.

The meeting, held at the National Press Club in Washington, DC on 8 March 2004, was attended by heads and senior representatives of the following churches: African Methodist Episcopal, African Methodist Episcopal Zion, Christian Methodist Episcopal, National Baptist Convention of America, National Baptist Convention USA, and Progressive National Baptist Convention, as well as members of the Black Churches' Liaison Committee.
In Africa, "the scourge of AIDS is devastating communities, ripping apart the social fabric and having dire economic consequences". But HIV/AIDS "is not an 'African problem' and it is not affecting 'someone else'. It is killing our brothers and sisters, our parents and pastors," Kobia told the gathering.
"We must do our part, and that begins with being informed and sharing the facts. But it also means the commitment of our churches to speaking the truth, acting with compassion, and challenging our governments to fulfill their moral obligations in the face of millions of unnecessary deaths each year," he went on.
