Overview Uruguay
República Oriental del Uruguay.
Location: The República Oriental del Uruguay is situated on South America?s Southern Cone, its eastern shore lies next to the Atlantic Ocean between the 30th and 35th southern latitude parallels and between the 53rd and 58th western longitude meridians. It is the warmest zone within the southern region. Uruguay borders Brazil on the north and northeast; Argentina on the west and south, the River Plate to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the east.
Surface:
a) Land: 176,215 Km2.
b) Jurisdictional waters and territorial sea: 142,093 Km2.
Altitude: a) average: 117 meters. b) highest peak: 514 meters. Climate: Mild and mostly uniform in the whole country with distinct seasons. The absence of mountains exposes the region to a wide spectrum of cold and humid southeasterly winds. As its name indicates the wind comes from the southeast, and the southerner or "pamperos" which blows from the Patagonia Andes. Hydrography: A number of rivers run through the country, most of them tributaries of the river Uruguay, natural border with Argentina. The river Uruguay is 1600 kilometers in length, it starts in Brazil and is navigable even by vessels with deep drafts. Among its most important tributaries are the rivers Cuareim, Arapey, Daymán, Queguay and the River Negro 600 kilometers in length which also begins in Brazil and divides the country in half.

Geophysical Data and Climate Location and Size: Uruguay is located between the 30 th and 35 th degree of southern latitude und and the 53 th and 58 th degree of western longitude. Its extension is km , which is approximately half the size of the Federal Republic of Germany (but with only 3.2 million inhabitants). Frontiers: In the east, the country is limited by the Atlantic Ocean (coastline: 120 miles), in the south by the River Plate ("Río de la Plata", 236 miles) and in the west by the River Uruguay ("Río Uruguay", 272 miles). The political neighbours are Argentina (in the west and the south) and Brazil (in the north; without a natural frontier). Climate: Uruguay belongs to the subtropical climatic zone, which means (to all all non-climatologists): comfortably warm summers (lasting in fact eight to nine months) and very mild winters (during the summer in the northern hemisphere). There is no rain or dry period, what is good for agriculture. Topography: Uruguay is charcterized (besides its beautiful beaches still untouched by mass tourism) by wide, smooth and evergreen plains. The highest hill reaches only 1.685 feet.

Uruguay President Supports Geography Vision
Dr. Jorge Batlle Ibáñez, president of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, shared his vision of geography being a framework for planning and management with Jack Dangermond on his recent trip to South America to discuss various national GIS initiatives. Uruguay has been actively involved in the use of GIS technology on a national level for more than a decade. In 1998, Uruguay made a major leap forward when it implemented the first National Spatial Data Infrastructure on the continent. The program, known as the National Geographic Information System (SIGNAC), is operated by the National Clearinghouse of Geographic Data (NCGD), a joint effort led by the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP) with the participation of the private sector. In addition to MTOP, other affiliates of the clearinghouse include the Ministries of Agriculture, Mining, Telephone, Environment, Municipal Council, Forestry, National Cadastre, Conservation, Water, and Pension Fund. The NCGD can be accessed via the Internet and offers digital cartography of the entire nation free of charge. Pertinent geographic information can be found at www.clearinghouse.gub.uy
