WELCOME
Thank you for your interest in the urology residency training program of Beth Israel Medical Center, the University Hospital and Manhattan Campus for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Our residency program is designed to provide a varied experience in patient care, teaching and research addressing the full range of male and female genitourinary conditions.
The strength of Beth Israel's urology program lies in the diversity of our faculty's interests, the large variety of clinical opportunities, and the availability of the most sophisticated technologies currently utilized by the urologic community. Residents train side-by-side with attending urologists who have expertise in general urologic care, as well as in highly specialized areas, such as infertility, microsurgery, sexual dysfunction, calculus disease, benign prostatic hypertrophy, urologic oncology, urodynamics, incontinence and pediatric urology.
One year of postgraduate training in general surgery at Beth Israel Medical Center is required for entrance into the urology program. Our urology residency training program enables residents to become outstanding urologists and prepares them to continue in subspecialty training. We invite you to visit our program to learn first-hand how your goals for a fulfilling and productive experience can be achieved.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
The goal of Stony Brook's urology residency program is to enable you to realize your full potential as a physician and urologic surgeon. Whether you are best suited for a career in general urology or in a urological specialty, our training program will give you the broad background necessary for either type of career.
During the course of training, the resident assumes an increasing level of responsibility for the patients under his or her care. This enables our residents to develop clinical judgment and self-confidence at an early stage of their careers. The cognitive progress of the urology resident is measured by the in-service examination. Theoretical aspects of urological training are fostered by carefully structured didactic exercises, in the form of courses, lectures, a visiting professor program, teaching rounds, and a journal club.
No matter how attractive a residency program appears, it is important that you consider the following questions before making a program selection:

To Apply For a 4th Year Elective

To Apply To Our Residency Program
March 07, 2005
Thank you for your inquiry regarding our urology residency training program. I appreciate your interest and wish to tell you more about it. Please check out our website at www.downstate.edu/urology.
In case you missed the announcement we now require only 1 year of pre-urology general surgery training.
In 2000 the Association of American Medical Colleges ranked Downstate 7th nationally in the number of alumni who hold full-time faculty positions in other medical schools. In terms of the number of alumni who are department chairs at other medical schools, Downstate was ranked 9th nationally.
One of the co-winners of the Nobel Prize in Medicine/Physiology for 1998 was Robert F. Furchgott, Ph.D, Distinguished Professor and former chairperson, Department of Pharmacology. He received the prize for his the discovery of the role of nitric oxide in the body's control of its vascular system. His work has led to a virtual revolution amongst researchers in all disciplines worldwide, prompting the exploration of a vast new field with huge potential for significant discoveries. Another great achievement at Downstate was the invention of the MRI by Dr. Ray Damadian.
The Department of Urology is independent of the other 19 clinical departments. Since assuming control of our training program, I have pursued a vigorous revitalization of it. This has resulted in major changes in our faculty, hospital rotations, research, resident profile and medical student and resident education activities.
