The Division of Urology Surgery offers a four-year residency program, upon completion of one preliminary general surgery year. The program is unique in the breadth of urologic procedures performed in a variety of healthcare settings including tertiary care, private practice and managed care. The program provides a strong clinical exposure, over 500-600 operative procedures per year. Prior residents have pursued highly sought after fellowships, academic careers and have joined busy highly regarded private practice groups. The PGY-2 resident will spend 6 months rotating on the transplant service (2 months), surgical intensive care unit (2 months) and a laparoscopy focused general surgery service (2 months). The remaining six months will be spent on the urology services at UMass University Campus and St. Vincent's Hospital. The emphasis on the urology rotations will be on outpatient evaluation and management of urologic diseases and outpatient procedures, (cystoscopy, transrectal ultrasound, ESWL, vasectomies, etc.) The PGY-3 year is spent entirely at the University Campus of the UMass Memorial Healthcare system, rotating on either the adult service or the pediatric and male sexual dysfunction service for a period of six months each.

Mission Statement
The mission of the UCSF Department of Urology is: to provide compassionate, cost-effective, skillful and innovative care to all patients to ask relevant questions and answer them with scientific knowledge obtained through laboratory and clinical research to educate students, residents and fellows in the art and science of urology and thereby to train the future leaders in our field to recognize that the Department of Urology is a group of individuals working together, responsibly and ethically, to achieve its goals
History
The discipline of urology at UCSF began at San Francisco County Hospital in 1900. In 1915, Dr. Frank Hinman, Sr., son of a pioneer family, became the first Chair of the Division of Urology. An extraordinary surgeon, teacher and scientist, Dr. Hinman and his monumental book, The Principles and Practice of Urology, first published in 1937, are enduring symbols of the department's commitment to the art and science of urology. Dr. Hinman served as Chair until his retirement in 1950. Dr. Donald Smith succeeded Dr. Hinman in 1951. His major clinical interests were fluid and electrolyte balance, renal physiology, reconstructive surgery (especially hypospadias repair), urinary tract infection, and pediatric urology. In 1957, he conceived and wrote the text, General Urology (now Smith's General Urology, in its 14th edition), whose concise, direct format has made it a classic for both undergraduate and practitioner. Dr. Smith trained 72 residents during his 25 year tenure as Chair, retiring in 1976.

Resident applicants - please click here Residency Training Introduction Urologic surgery is a very diversified and rapidly changing specialty. Urologists treat male and female patients of all ages with a great variety of congenital and acquired diseases. They have to master many imaging, urodynamic, and laboratory techniques and be skilled in endoscopic and open surgery. In order to be competent in all aspects of this specialty, we believe that a six year program is essential. The department has a strong commitment to basic and clinical research, and all residents have approximately twelve months of research or elective time in the six years (usually the PGY 4 year). Interested residents are encouraged to spend up to two additional years learning basic and applied research skills. Therefore, our graduates are well qualified to enter private practice or start on an academic career. Clinical Training Program The program is six years in length: one and a half in general surgery, and four and a half in urology. General surgery years are taken at the University of Washington Affiliated Hospitals, where the resident receives extensive experience in patient care, as well as an opportunity to participate in open surgeries. The PGY1 year is straight general surgery. As a PGY2, the resident spends six months on general surgery and six months on urology (three months at the VA and three months at the UWMC). In the first full urology year (PGY3), residents rotate between the University of Washington Medical Center, Children's Hospital and Medical Center, Harborview and the VA Medical Center and learn basic urologic diagnostic and therapeutic techniques under the supervision of the Chief Residents and the full time academic staff.
