autore non disponibile Data di pubblicazione: 03/11/2001 The Guardian It is said that the finest silk feels like nothing between the fingertips. Alessandro Baricco's international bestseller, Silk, was fine in every sense of the word: a beguiling 19th-century fable of a French silkworm trader and a Japanese concubine, whose wordless passion was so elliptically evoked that the novella barely seemed to exist. Now the Turin-based author follows it with a work cut from the coarsest, scratchiest tweed imaginable. Not only is City a much bulkier tome, it's a knotty ragbag of wanton circumlocution and narrative anarchy. It is like slipping out of a kimono and pulling on a hairshirt. Not that the experience is unduly penitential; it is just that tramping around Baricco's narrative can be tough going at times, and it does take a while to find your bearings. The author has stated that he wanted "to write a book that moved like someone who gets lost in the city... the stories are neighbourhoods, the characters are streets". What this means is that the place is packed with weird caricatures and unreliable narrators, none of whom are interested in giving intelligible directions. You might take this to signify that a city is a loose agglomeration of several different districts, whereas City is a loose agglomeration of several different books.

Report on Public Health and Urban Sprawl in Ontario Executive Summary This report summarizes pertinent information on the relationship between urban sprawl and health. It serves to identify the key issues that are relevant to the growing number of sprawl-related health problems in Ontario which is comparable to US situations and is far worse compared to Europe.
The best available evidence indicates that greenspace is an essential part of human health. People cannot continue to lead healthy lives without sufficient farmland to produce local food, forests to help purify the air, and protected watersheds to provide safe drinking water. Neither of these complementary goals - protecting environmental systems and protecting human health - can be accomplished, however, without curbing urban sprawl. By setting aside one million new acres for a Greenbelt in southern Ontario, the provincial government has taken strong steps towards protecting the environment, and building stronger, healthier, more compact communities. Other connected strategies, such as the proposed Growth Plan and the Planning Reform initiative, will also play key roles in controlling sprawling growth.

Overview Faculty Webcast Discussion This program was originally broadcast January 18, 2002. Urban Sprawl: What's Health Got to Do With It?
Overview
Urban sprawl impacts land use, transportation, and social and economic development, but it also has serious implications for our health. There is increasing evidence that the way we design our communities discourages physical activity such as walking and cycling, contributes to air pollution, and promotes pedestrian injuries and fatalities. Automobile dependence contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, and increases the risk of car crashes. Runoff due to the absence of vegetation is polluting our water systems. And sprawl may threaten mental health and social capital. Join us as we discuss these and other health effects and present the case of Portland, Oregon, a community that has made great strides in containing urban sprawl. We will explore the history of this issue, our current situation, and future directions in promoting smart growth and healthy communities.
Objectives
  • Define urban sprawl and how it can be measured.

Urban Sprawl is not simply a development that undercuts the quality of life for suburbanites. It has raised alarms across the nation, as fair housing advocates, environmentalists, land use planners, and even many suburban employers who cannot find the workers they need, have recognized that the costs go far beyond aesthetics. Despite the agreement that something needs to be done, there is no consensus on what works. Urban Sprawl: Causes, Consequences, and Policy Responses assembles leading scholars who analyze the major causes and consequences of urban sprawl and the policy initiatives that are being explored in response to these developments. They look at Maryland's "smart growth" initiatives, Portland's urban growth boundary, and tax-based revenue sharing in the Twin Cities and Chicago metropolitan areas. Urban Sprawl is fundamental for understanding the forces shaping urban development and the social and economic costs of this very visible problem. , edited by Gregory D. Squires, is available in paperback from the Urban Institute Press (6" x 9", 404 pages, ISBN 0-87766-709-8, $32.50). To order call (202) 261-5687 or toll-free 1-877-847-7377.

Land use and urban sprawl are critically important issues.
Land use and urban sprawl are major environmental concerns affecting us in a variety of ways. We must adopt sustainable patterns of development which are not self-destructive.
What is Urban Sprawl? "Sprawl" is the increased use of urbanized land by fewer people than in the past. Traditional cities were compact and efficient, but over the past 30-50 years, the density of land used per person has declined drastically. Although the U.S. population grew by 17 percent from 1982 to 1997, urbanized land increased by 47 percent during the same 15 year period. The developed acreage per person has nearly doubled in the past 20 years, and housing lots larger than 10 acres have accounted for 55 percent of land developed since 1994, according to the American Farmland Trust. Impacts of Sprawl
Between 1950 and 2002, the number of acres of
farmland in Wisconsin dropped by 32.6%,
from 23.6 million acres down to 15.9 million.

Urban sprawl (also called suburban sprawl and occasionally Los Angelization ) describes the growth of a metropolitan area , particularly the suburbs , over a large area. In examples of this phenomenon, such as Los Angeles, California and Houston, Texas , new development is often low- density , where the metropolis grows outward instead of 'upward' as with higher densities. Environmentalists and an increasing number of urban planners disapprove of urban sprawl for several reasons.

Will We Live In Accidental Cities or Successful Communities?
by Luther Propst
A wave of poorly managed growth is transforming America's small towns and suburbs. From Maine to California, small towns and suburbs are becoming accidental cities, causing the deterioration of open space, rivers, fertile agricultural lands, and historic landscapes, while increasing traffic congestion and unsightly strip development. Understanding the spread of the accidental city requires a look at changes in the nature of urban and suburban areas. Once almost solely residential, many suburbs now have "more jobs than bedrooms:" two thirds of all jobs created between 1960 and 1980 were in suburbs, a shift that has brought a corresponding change in commuting patterns. The number of people who commute to a suburb has town twice as fast as the number commuting to a central city. Now, nearly half of all commuters travel to a suburb to work. The long-accepted vision of urban regions, which assumed that most workers would have jobs downtown, is increasingly becoming obsolete. The change in commuting patterns has also exacerbated automotive congestion. Suburban roads are increasingly crowded, while rush hour periods and commutes are steadily lengthening. Nationally, the number of cars is growing twice as fast as the number of people. Motorists travel twice as many miles per person as they did in 1960. In 1975, two in five urban interstates were congested at rush hour. Ten years later, it was three in five (Work et al. 1987).

URBAN SPRAWL CITIES PLANNING POPULATION GROWTH GEOGRAPHY MAPS Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Description Traffic jams on California freeways come to mind when people think about urban sprawl. Research by a University of Denver geographer, however, shows that true urban sprawl occurs most often in mid-west and southern metropolitan areas.
"Western cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco have lower levels of urban sprawl than inland and mid-western cities such as Atlanta, St. Louis and Minneapolis," says Paul C. Sutton, professor of geography at DU. Dr. Sutton examined urban sprawl in all US metro areas with populations of 50,000 or more. His research is described in the August 2003 issue of the journal Remote Sensing of Environment (Vol. 86, Issue 3) in a paper titled "A Scale-Adjusted Measure of Urban Sprawl Using Nighttime Satellite Imagery." Looking at limits for urban sprawl
Controlling suburban development becomes next century's challenge for nation's cities
March 11, 1999 BY JEFF GERRITT
Free Press Staff Writer It's 6:40 a.m. on a Thursday, and a stream of headlights marches south on Lapeer Road in northern Oakland County. They're heading to plants, offices and retail centers from Pontiac to downtown Detroit. The endless, winding snake moves toward I-75, another sign of the urban growth and sprawl that have started to alarm some residents and planners and even developers. MEETING PLANNED The issues of urban growth and sprawl will be key to a May 2-5 conference at Cobo Hall in Detroit. At the National Town Meeting for Sustainable Development, business, government and civic leaders will study ways to balance economic, environmental and social goals. About 3,000 people are expected to attend, with many more linked via satellite and the Internet. For more information: www.sustainableamerica.org
