Forest Management
The forest management program has its primary emphasis on undergraduate education and extension. Major outreach programs focus on:
  • Forest and wildlife stewardship
  • Urban and community forestry
  • Estate planning and family lands protection
  • Municipal and watershed natural resources inventories and planning

A combined research/extension program focuses on landscape characterization and forest fragmentation. FOREST RESOURCES IN CONNECTICUT Connecticut 370 years after settlement is 60% forested. Almost 90% of that forest is privately owned by some 115,000 individuals, families and land trusts. Our forests make major contributions to our economy and the quality of our lives. Annual production of over 70 million board feet of high quality timber provides the material for over 350 Connecticut industries that process wood. These industries contribute over $400 million annually to Connecticut's economy and export a wide variety of products around the globe. Our forests also provide the essential backdrop for Connecticut's $3.9 billion recreation/tourism industry, and produce and estimated 500,000 cords of firewood, 400,000 Christmas trees, 15,000 gallons of maple syrup and two million gallons of witch hazel astringent each year.

People are becoming more aware of how important plants, trees, and green spaces are to their quality of life. By protecting against the harshness of your environment, greenery can significantly contribute to a healthier and a more wholesome community. Trees clean the air, reduce the urban heat island effect, reduce energy costs, conserve soil, and beautify neighborhoods. They make shopping districts more inviting, enhance residential and commercial property values, and reflect the pride we take in our communities.

    Urban and Community Forestry Program
Much of the national news about forestry reported in the press or broadcast on TV pertains to wilderness and other lands quite distant from the daily lives of most people. But trees and forests growing in villages, towns and cities are increasingly being recognized as contributing to the overall environmental quality of places where people live and work. While trees have long been valued for shade and beauty, community forests provide a multitude of benefits. Recent studies indicate that community forests improve air quality, provide habitat for a diversity of wildlife, increase residential property values and enhance the vitality of downtown business districts by attracting shoppers and tourists. Furthermore, community forests provide opportunities to engage and educate large numbers of people about plant ecology, natural resource management and other environmental themes beyond the boundaries of a particular village, town or city.
