The earliest public trees, Norway maple, were brought in from the New England area. These trees were sent by steam engine to Bismarck/Mandan, North Dakota, transferred and shipped by paddle boat to Fort Benton, Montana, and then transferred to ox-drawn carriage for the last jump over the continental divide to Missoula, Montana. Since this time Missoula has been named a "Tree City USA" by the National Arbor Day Foundation for years. Search: THE URBAN FOREST The urban forest is the complex system of trees and smaller plants, wildlife, associated organisms, soil, water and air in and around our city. It is the trees along our streets and in our parks, the vegetation around our homes and businesses, and the plants in the natural areas throughout the city. The urban forest provides beauty and benefits to Portland residents. It provides improved air and water quality, savings from decreased heating and cooling costs and increased property resale values. The urban forest is vital to our efforts to restore fish and wildlife habitat. It provides countless opportunities for recreation and makes our neighborhoods more pleasing. It plays a significant role in the high quality of life that Portland residents enjoy. Some of the benefits of the urban forest can be measured. The energy saved, the water kept out of treatment plants, and the benefits of cleaner air can be quantified. It is estimated that one large residential tree produces $4,000 of net economic benefit over its first fifty years1 and increases residential resale values by 6 to 9%.2 The trees in the Portland metropolitan region save over $20 billion in storm water costs by eliminating the need for expensive treatment, as well as saving nearly $2 million annually in summer energy savings.3 Other benefits are less easily measured, but no less valuable. We use the urban forest for recreation and depend on it for spiritual renewal. The aesthetic and inspirational value of the hundreds of thousands of trees in Portland's urban forest is incalculable.
