WATCHKEEPER TACTICAL UAV SYSTEM, UNITED KINGDOM
In July 2004, the UK Ministry of Defence announced that Thales UK had been selected as the preferred bidder for the Watchkeeper Tactical Unmanned Air Vehicle (TUAV) system. Watchkeeper will provide the UK armed forces with Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) capability. In August 2005, Thales UK was awarded the contract for the Development, Manufacture and Initial Support (DMIS) phases of the Watchkeeper programme. The number of Watchkeeper systems has not yet been announced. Watchkeeper is a tactical system that will be operated in theatre by the British Army Royal Artillery. Thales UK's Watchkeeper proposal included a large UAV and a smaller UAV, support equipment and ground stations. The MoD has decided that a single UAV solution is more cost-effective and only the larger WK450 UAV will be developed. The air vehicle will be capable of carrying a range of sensors including day and night cameras and surveillance radars. Two WK450 air vehicles will be able to operate in tandem, with the second acting as a communications relay. The ground control station will be network-enabled to ensure comprehensive communications links, for example to airborne stand-off radar, attack aircraft and battlegroup headquarters. The Watchkeeper system will enter service in the British armed forces in 2010. A full Watchkeeper system can be deployed to theatre in a single C-130 Hercules transport aircraft.

STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL 10 December 2002 LIKELY HUMANITARIAN SCENARIOS Introduction 1. In presenting the present paper it is not presumed that wa s [r] is not inevitable. However, for planning purposes, and as requested, certain assumptions are made in preparing for eventualities should hostilities occur. Unlike the progression of the military intervention in 1991, a future confrontation is expected to develop beyond the preparatory, and relatively short, aerial bombardment of infrastructure, towns, and cities into potentially a large scale and protracted ground offensive, supported by aerial and conventional bombardment. The resultant devastation would undoubtedly be great. Initially, access to those in need would either be denied by one or other of the protagonists or severely hampered by security or safety concerns. Additionally, logistics, particularly the ability to move with any degree of freedom, will be a major constraint.

Old enemies' wargames send a powerful message to the US
By Jane Macartney
Russia and China hope to sign a massive arms deal after staging joint exercises for the first time
RUSSIA will show off its most modern bombers to its best military customer and China will have a chance to demonstrate that it is a force to be reckoned with when the giant neighbours hold their first joint military exercises this month. NI_MPU('middle'); Russian paratroops will jump on to the peninsula, while Russian ships will engage in amphibious landing exercises. Analysts say there is little doubt that China is keen to send a message to the US. Not only is it gradually expanding its influence in Asia, eroding decades of dominance by Washington, but it also has the cash to go on a spending spree to update its military. The war games will involve a Russian airlift of an airborne unit to the training location by Il76 transport aircraft, launching a cruise missile to an imaginary target with TU22M3 medium-range bombers and bombing ground units with Su27SM fighters.
