Whose Water Is It?: The Unquenchable Thirst of a Water-Hungry World

Bernadette Mcdonald
Less than one percent of the Earth's water is fresh water available for drinking, irrigation, and industry. By 2025, the UN expects more than half the world's population will lack sufficient water to cover basic needs. Since 1970 the water supply has declined by 33 percent. Mankind has always taken water for granted. For the first time, we must face a new reality: Not only is this precious resource not inexhaustible, it's already so scarce that great swaths of our planet are under serious threat. In this provocative and important book, 14 prominent environmental writers address every aspect of the looming crisis.

The old Norwegian kingdom fosters freedom and proverbs. Proverbs of Man (Mann, Manx) reflect the common sense of people and nature there throughout recorded history. The Manx cat comes in every color and pattern, is stocky, has large bones, and a rumpy, stumpy, or longy tail (etc.). Only the show-quality Manx lack a tail completely. More CLIMATE AND OTHER CONDITIONS: Manx lies in the Irish Sea off the northwest coast of England. Manx is not part of the United Kingdom, but a somewhat self-governing crown possession (since 1828). The climate is maritime temperate, with cool summers and mild winters. The island's farms produce oats, wheat, barley, turnips, and potatoes, and cattle and sheep graze on the pastures of the central massif.
HISTORY: The Isle of Man (Manx) has a long and complex history and cultural heritage. At one time Norwegians colonised the Orkneys, Faroes, and Iceland, and even Manx. The island became the centre of a Viking kingdom that included the western isles of Scotland at its height. That Norse (Viking) invasions began about AD 800, and the isle was a dependency of Norway until 1266. Hence, The Isle of Man was a Viking Kingdom for almost 500 years. During that period Man came under a Scandinavian system of government, and the Celts and Norwegians blended well. The Norwegian king sold Man in 1266. The island came under the control of England in 1341. From then the island's successive feudal lords styled themselves "kings of Mann". The British Parliament bought sovereignty over the island in 1765.

Despite writing this introduction a good week before the actual event, the 22 nd annual Perspectives on Contemporary Legend conference and ISCLR annual general meeting looks set to be the largest meeting the society has held since 1997 (possibly even longer, but I only have, even partial, data since ’97). This year, there are 34 papers scheduled, with an estimated additional 16 delegates attending, but not presenting. (If anyone has data figures from the years prior to ’97, please forward them to me, as these are useful statistics.) In finalizing the panels of papers, despite very clear thematic clusters, I tended to avoid organizing themed panels in the end (unless specifically requested, as in a few cases – for details of the schedule, see
