By Véronique Campion-Vincent Corner Brook Conference Call for Papers Perspectives on Contemporary Legend 2002 – Conference Abstracts Sheffield, UK “‘From Sticks and Stones to Toilet Ghosts’: An Examination of Story and Character Development in Children’s Pretend Play as They Progress Through School” Armitage, Marc Marc.armitage@playpeople.karoo.co.uk One of the strongest elements of children’s play that contributes to our adult memories and defining of ‘childhood’ is the imaginary and pretence play. Solitary and socio-dramatic role-play such as playing at schools, hospitals and even ‘mums and dads’ is instantly recognizable as part of the childhood experience. And yet there is a less well recognized and darker side to what Plato referred to as ‘the biggest menace that could ever inflict a state’. The pretend play of even very young children is full of elements such as kidnap, murder, death ... and worse. Much of this play within the school is based on the existence of a well known - and more importantly named - ghost-like character. However, despite the fact that there are strong similarities in the detail and structure of this type of play around the world, the availability of research material on the characters, stories and the rituals associated with them is disappointingly low. What consistencies there are between the stories proves interesting in its self but in addition, "More recently psychologists' concern with such figures has been with the light they can shed on children's ability to distinguish systematically between fantasy and reality, … and therefore the role that fantasy plays in cognitive development."

KING ARTHUR AND THE HOLY GRAIL compiled by Dee Finney IS THE SHROUD OF TURIN OF KING ARTHUR? Someone should have asked the question long ago, why did Cortez expect to find gold in the Americas i
n the first place? Why did the crew on the boats of Columbus expect to find gold?
Why did the marauding Spaniards kill eight million native American Indians looking for gold.
The truth is that the royal families of England and Spain had spoken as far back as
King Arthur in 530 AD that their "treasure house" was located in the "Mericas"
(Source for this statement needed Landaff Charters from the sixth century).
The German who suggested that we named the Americas after
Amerigo Vespucci recanted his story when he found the tales
of the "Mericas" stars which lead the way to the "promised land".

Et de nomine Manannan the Isle of Man dictus est This theory of the Isle of Man being named after Manannan, when so called, has been shown to be highly improbable by Professor Rhys, who thinks that "Manannan gave his original name corresponding to Mann and its congeners to the Island, making it Manavia Insula. . . . for which we have in Welsh and Irish respectively Manaw and Manann. Then from these names of the Island the god derives his in its attested forms of Manawydan and Manannan, which would seem to mark an epoch when he had become famous in connection with the Isle of Man." p. 3 chieftains. He is still vividly remembered in the mountainous district of Derry and Donegal, and is said to have an enchanted castle in Lough Foyle. According to the traditions in the Isle of Man and the Eastern counties of Leinster, this first man of Man rolled on three legs like a wheel through the mist." O'Flaherty speaks of him in his Ogygia as follows: "The merchant Orbsen was remarkable for carrying on a commercial intercourse between Ireland and Britain. He was commonly called Mananan Mac Lir, that, is, Mananan, on account of his intercourse with the Isle of Man; and Mac Lir

David Anderson’s Literature of Human-Animal Studies
David C Anderson, Rockydell Resources, 340 Killdeer Court Lincoln California ; rockydell@digitalpath.net
Mr. Anderson edited and published the journal of resources on the human-animal relationship,
In the early 2000s the field of Human-Animal Studies is thriving in a variety of scholarly disciplines by members who are interested in the human relationship to animals. In 2002 the American Sociological Association recognized a new section devoted to Human-Animal Studies (www.asanet.org/sectionanimals/). Members of the American Psychological Association are petitioning for a similar division. A book of readings from both disciplines has been proposed by a social psychologist and a sociologist. The 10th anniversary issues of , published in 2002, include contributions from anthropology, the (representational) arts, consumer sociology, criminology, economics, feminist studies, geography, history, political science, postcolonial studies, psychology, religion, and sociology. This reflects the academic interest of individuals and individual course offerings, but not a growth in academic programs. The growth of academic centers with special interest in human-animal studies is slow, and they are generally, but not exclusively, attached to schools of veterinary medicine. Notable exceptions among the programs are two housed in a school of nursing ( Michigan State University and University of Missouri Columbia ) and another in a humanities program (
