The School of Geography is part of the new Oxford University Centre for the Environment OUCE ) at the University of Oxford . The OUCE consists of the academic department of the School of Geography as well as two established research centres - the Environmental Change Institute ECI ) and the Transport Studies Unit TSU The School of Geography has recognised international leadership in research in physical and human geography and in the interdisciplinary field of environmental science. The Migration Research Unit
The Migration Research Unit (MRU) is based in the Department of Geography at University College London (UCL) . Its purpose is to carry out high quality research, independently or in collaboration with others, designed to increase knowledge and understanding of international population migration issues. The following are the Unit's overarching research aims:
  • To contribute to knowledge on patterns and trends in migration at the national, European and global levels; To increase understanding of the interrelationships between public policy and patterns of migration at each level; To develop new conceptual approaches to the study of migration.
  • In fulfilling these aims, the Unit seeks to consolidate a national and international reputation for research excellence and to disseminate research findings in a way which ensures maximum benefit. The MRU was established in 1988. Extensive links have been developed with governmental organisations, academic institutions and other agencies both in the UK and overseas. Those commissioning research from the MRU have included the European Commission, the OECD, the Council of Europe, the UK Department for Education and Employment and the Home Office. In recent years research has focused particularly on European migration.
