The National Bureau of Statistics said the economy grew 9.5% from a year earlier in the first half, more than the 9.3% figure expected by analysts. Total gross domestic product (GDP) between January and June reached 6.7 trillion yuan (£466bn; $811bn). Exports and investment in construction and factory equipment drove growth. 'Slowing the economy' "Fairly good overall economic performance was recorded in the first half of this year," the statistical office said, adding that "China's high rate of bank savings, investment, robust market demand and abundant labour forces" helped to underpin growth. Looking at China's development targets, we see that we need to preserve fairly high economic growth

... Newswatch Last Updated: Tuesday, 9 August 2005, 11:00 GMT 12:00 UK E-mail this to a friend Printable version UK trade deficit shrinks sharply The figures could bring hope for a manufacturing sector in recession The UK's trade gap narrowed sharply in June, igniting hopes for improved economic growth, official figures show.
The difference between what the UK exported and imported was £4.27bn ($7.62bn), down from May's £4.98bn. The figure was less than analysts' forecasts of a £4.9bn deficit, said the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The deficit with the enlarged EU was £0.1bn higher than in May at £2.8bn as imports, in particular cars, rose by more than exports. Meanwhile, the deficit with non-EU countries was £1.44bn compared with £2.28bn in May and forecasts for £2.3bn. "The numbers were surprisingly positive, in particular the extent to which exports have rallied," said Peter Dixon, economist at Commerzbank. Alan Clarke, economist at BNP Paribas, added: "The narrowing in the trade deficit on the face of it should help GDP (gross domestic product) growth going forward." Fraud concerns However, the ONS said it had concerns that the breakdown between EU and non-EU trade may have been distorted by "missing trader fraud" involving VAT payments.

In addition to official statistics, the MPC considers a range of surveys provided by business organisations such as the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC). These surveys can provide additional indications of business trends and conditions. Surveys can be useful in supplementing the information from official data sources. They often provide an independent check on the current situation and trends. In addition, some survey responses provide forward-looking information. In many cases, survey information is very timely, providing indications of economic conditions before other data are available.
    the nature of survey information
