Formerly known as the Trucial States, Trucial Coast, or Trucial Oman, the seven constituent emirates were bound to Great Britain by truce (1820) and agreement (1892). After World War II Britain granted autonomy to the emirates, and in 1971 the independent federation was formed; neighboring Qatar and Bahrain, which originally were to be part of the federation, opted for separate statehood. Originally governed by a provisional constitution, the federation went through a period of severe internal tensions in the late 1970s and 1980s, with rivalry between Abu Dhabi and Dubai hampering closer cooperation. The United Arab Emirates participated with the international coalition against Iraq during the Persian Gulf War (1991) and since then has expanded its international contacts and diplomatic relations. The federation's constitution was made permanent in 1996. A dispute erupted with Saudi Arabia in 1999 over relations with Iran, a traditional enemy; while Saudi Arabia appeared willing to seek improved ties, the emirates still regarded Iran as a foe. Sheikh Zaid ibn Sultan al-Nahayan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi, was president of the UAE from the founding of the federation until his death in 2004, when his son and heir, Sheikh Khalifa ibn Zaid Al Nahayan, was elected to succeeded him.

The sheikdoms then came under loose Ottoman control until the arrival of European colonists in the 1820s. After attacks on British-owned shipping by pirates operating in the Gulf region, they were brought under British suzerainty. The local Arab rulers signed a treaty with the British in 1853, under which they accepted British military protection and, in turn, promised to refrain from piracy. The United Arab Emirates came into being as an independent state on 2 December 1971. Internal politics are prone to instability, because of the uncertain nature of the federation and boundary disputes. Sharjah, in particular, has been the subject of a couple of coup attempts. However, the ruling families in the two main emirates, Dubai (the al-Makhtoums) and Abu Dhabi (whose ruler, Sheikh Khalifa bin Sultan al-Nahayan, is the president of the UAE), have managed to stabilize the federation. The other four emirates are: Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah and Umm al-Qaiwain.

United Arab Emirates (11/04) Prior to the first exports of oil in 1962, the UAE economy was dominated by pearl production, fishing, agriculture, and herding. Since the rise of oil prices in 1973, however, petroleum has dominated the economy, accounting for most of its export earnings and providing significant opportunities for investment. The UAE has huge proven oil reserves, estimated at 98.8 billion barrels in 2003, with gas reserves estimated at (212 trillion cubic feet); at present production rates, these supplies would last well over 150 years. ... Date: Subject: Culture Question I have to write a paper about one of the middle eastern countries. I chose United Arab Emirates because it has always interested me, but I don't know what theme to chose from. Is there any way you could give a very interesting theme (like women's roles) and some information on it? I could use all the information you can give me. I would love to do something on the cultural or traditional aspects of the area. It is greatly appreciated. Answer hello there Stephanie , I'm glad that you have chosen UAE to write about. About the theme ,women's role in the UAE sounds good to me. Writing about it might help in correcting the misunderstanding of our rule in the UAE. For example women were totally in charge for the matter of the family and mostly the society when the men where away in the journeys of diving for pearls. Another theme might be the UAE economy , Dubai development in the region, the united emirates ( the only united country in the middle east ), UAE shopping festivals , the traditional , the society ….etc
