Unitarian? What's that?
WHO ARE WE? We are Unitarians who come from all walks of life - our common thread - the belief in religious freedom and thought and an insatiable thirst for truth and the desire to unravel the meaning of life.We have no set creed or dogma but encourage people to make up their own minds based on personal life experiences, reflections, intuition and the voice of conscience. We practice tolerance and respect for others of differing opinions and faiths and aim to live in harmony with all. AS UNITARIANS We welcome you for what you are. Come and share with us in the experience of a free and inquiring religion enriched not only by Christian beliefs but by all religious philosophy and well-meaning thought. WANT TO KNOW MORE?

Unitarianism Contact us
Unitarianism by Rev June Pettitt
Note: with the exception of a few minor alterations this is a transcript of the address given in the service at Fulwood Old Chapel on May 23rd 2004 I want to put across this morning something of the essence of the tradition and faith of Unitarians. Some of you may have heard sermons before about Unitarianism, but I think you will nevertheless be interested to hear what I have to say, how I explain it, what I choose to emphasise. I want to emphasise the idea of freedom, freedom with responsibility, the privilege of freedom to follow our own spiritual path, and here at Fulwood Old Chapel, and in other Unitarian churches and chapels, to do that in community, not as isolated individuals. The upholding of the idea of religious freedom, and practice of it, is the common thread that holds our religious tradition together. One place to start is the word itself: Unitarianism. 'Uni' meaning One, its origins sixteenth century. It referred to the idea that God was one, and meant that the position of Jesus was not equal to that of God. Those who in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries first put forward these ideas were heretics. They got their views from reading the Bible closely. My text from the Bible this morning Luke Chapter 18 verses 18 and 19, is an example of what they could have read. I'll remind you of the passage.

Forms of Unitarianism
There are three distinct schools of Unitarian thought:
  • 'Biblical Unitarianism' - God is one being Who consists of one person - the Father. The Messiah is the Son of God, but not God Himself, nor even a pre-existent being. Jesus Christ is the Son of God; a mortal man (who did not exist before his conception and subsequent birth), conceived by the Holy Spirit, who later received immortality and divine nature. Even now he is still not God, but rather an exalted man. Biblical Unitarians are distinguished from Rationalist Unitarians by their strict adherence to Sola Scriptura and their belief that Scripture is both inspired and inerrant.

69. Clifton Unitarian Church - What Is Unitarianism?

http://www.cliftonunitarian.com/whatisunitarianism.html
"the little church with a lot of room" HOME Contact Us Clifton Unitarian Church is part of the Unitarian Universalist Association which formed in 1961. Unitarian Universalism is a liberal religion that is accepting of all traditions, ideas and lifestyles. We keep our minds open to the religious questions people have struggled with in all times and places. We believe that personal experience, conscience, and reason should be the final authorities in religion. In the end religious authority lies not in a book, person, or institution, but in ourselves. We put religious insights to the test of our hearts and minds. We uphold the free search for truth. We will not be bound by a statement of belief. We do not ask anyone to subscribe to a creed. We say ours is a non-creedal religion. Ours is a free faith. We believe that religious wisdom is ever changing. Human understanding of life and death, the universe and its mysteries, is never final. Revelation is continuous. We celebrate unfolding truths known to teachers, prophets, and sages throughout the ages. We affirm the worth of all women and men. We believe people should be encouraged to think for themselves. We know people differ in their opinions and lifestyles, and we believe these differences should be honored.

Unitarianism
What’s great about having a blog (even a frequently dormant one like mine) is receiving e-mails from all sorts of interesting people. I have recently been corresponding with a Canadian Unitarian minister who is interested in Islam and other world religions. I asked him about Unitarianism and he was more than generous in his response:
Today the Unitarian church is the most liberal of the protestant groups. Some Christians and even many Unitarians do not consider us Christian. We are very humanistic in our outlook.
Socially Unitarians are usually very well educated, socially and politically involved in their community. They seem to believe that Faith has more to do with how you behave rather than what you say you believe. "It is best to be known by deeds rather than creeds". Historically we have been in the forefront of education for women, concern for convicts, mental health, social work, anti-slavery, civil rights and opposition to war.
Part II:
Throughout Christian history there has been a minor theme of Unitarian Christianity. In fact, early in its history Unitarian theology might have been a majority view. At the Council of Nicea Trinitarian Christianity was made the orthodoxy. Since then Unitarianism has been a heretical view. It has had other names. Other than Unitarian. Today there are Christian theologians who do not hold to Trintitarianism in mainstream Christianity. There certainly is room for dialogue.... Channing was one of the early shapers of Unitarianism in America. The other two were Theodore Parker and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Parker was most famous for his anti-slavery efforts and Emerson was a literary figure. Emerson had notions in his writing influenced by Hindu thought. He wrote about the notion of the "oversoul". All three of these men were Unitarian clergymen.

By 1820, provinces throughout the region centralized their power by replacing the cabildos with provincial governments. Buenos Aires, no longer serving the administrative role of the Viceroyalty , turned its substantial resources towards implementing liberal polices within its borders. Led by Bernardino Rivadavia , the province enacted legislation supporting universal male suffrage, freedom of the press, religious toleration, tax reform, European immigration, floating interest rates, and public education. To a lesser extent, many of the same acts were carried out in the interior, although most included a tariff tax in imports to protect local industry. A national congress assembled in 1824 considered the issue of national unity. They passed a law that provinces would govern themselves until a national constitution could be signed. As the United Provinces, they elected the liberal Rivadavia to the presidency of the republic. He quickly implemented many of the liberal measures that were in place in Buenos Aires. These policies, particularly those against the church, turned provincial opinion against Rivadavia. In 1827 Rivadavia resigned the presidency, effectively ending national and liberal governance for a generation. Into the void stepped

    First Congregation: 1774
First Congregation in the USA: 1782
    American Unitarian Association founded: 1825
Unitarians merged with Universalists: 1961 Definition: The doctrine of Unitarianism is a Christian belief which developed in opposition to the orthodox Christian doctrine of trinitarianism. The first use of the word appears to have been in Transylvania in 1568, when the Reformation was a mere 50 years old. With roots in the Radical wing of the Reformation of the early 16th century, Unitarianism has long pursued a more rationalistic approach to religion and Christianity. According to Unitarianism, God has but a single personality and form, while Jesus was only a human. Other traditional doctrines rejected by Unitarians are the Fall, Atonement, and eternal punishment in hell. Unitarianism moved from a doctrine to a denomination in the early 19th century in England and the United States through the work of Christians who adhered to Arminian Theology, and in the 1960s American Unitarianism dissociated itself from Christianity generally. For Unitarians, religion is treated as something like a refined moral sensibility rather than a commitment to a life-long spiritual transformation as in some Christian groups.
