Underwater Photography Equipment Underwater photography is one area where you definitely need special equipment, and special techniques to go with them. There are two main solutions to the problem of taking a camera underwater: dedicated underwater cameras, and housings which keep regular above water cameras from getting wet.
For some years most professional underwater photographers used dedicated underwater cameras as their primary means of doing underwater photography. Although several systems exist, including cameras by companies like Sea and Sea with their Motor Marine line of cameras, the market was dominated by a division of Nikon called Nikonos, and by one camera in particular, the Nikonos V. Dedicated Underwater Cameras The Nikonos V is a strange candidate to be the world's premier underwater camera. It's a manual camera - a seriously manual camera. It's not a single lens reflex (SLR) camera or a rangefinder camera, it's more like a point-and-shoot camera where the scene through the viewfinder only corresponds roughly with what will appear in the final shot. Furthermore, this is a point-and-shoot camera which must be focussed manually without any mechanical, electronic or optical aids! The lens has two knobs on its side, one of which selects the aperture, and one of which selects the distance between the camera and the subject. Before taking a shot you must mentally estimate the distance between yourself and the subject of your photo, and then dial this into the lens before pressing the shutter release. After taking a shot the film must then be advanced manually!

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO RE-LEARN BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY The fundamentals of photography remain the same wherever you are taking pictures, but when the medium that light travels through is water - not air - special techniques and equipment are needed in order to capture good images.
Proper exposure and sharp focus are as important underwater as on the surface. Quillback rock fish photo courtesy of Tom Sheldon.

So you want to take scuba pictures, huh? Great! One of scuba's best moments is when your coworkers oooh and ahhh over your photos. You can do it. But don't expect to just swim down there and start shooting great pictures like you see in the magazines.
My first three rolls, I couldn't tell whether the dark blurry blobs on those slides were fish or snails, or even the inside of my dive bag. The next dive trip, I recognized Garibaldi tails in my photos. The tamest fish in the ocean, and I couldn't seem to click the shutter before it turned south. The next dive, I'm trying to figure out the right f-stop for a fill-flash ambient-light diver portrait, staring down the barrel of the Nikonos as I bang into rocks in the surge when my "photo model" swims off in search of a dive buddy who doesn't carry a camera. I'm finally taking some decent scuba pictures, and it's great fun. I've even sold some underwater photos. So hang in there. You'll take a lot of "duds," but mixed in with them will be some knock-your-socks-off pictures suitable for framing. There are ten lessons in this tutorial. You can work through them in sequence by clicking on the garibaldi at the bottom as you finish a lesson, or you can jump to a specific lesson by clicking on a title in the navigation bar at the

Procedures for Standard Underwater Photography.
Using standard lenses can result in quality photos if you know some basics for getting the most out of your enjoyment of the dive and simple procedures.
When divers first start photographing on a dive, it results in taking snap shots of dive buddies, sponges, fish, eels and lobsters. There will be sand stirred from divers fins, which is where the flash reflects off the sand creating white specks in the pictures called back scatter. There will be images out of focus because the depth of field or in simple terms the area where the lens is focused is not within the subject matter being photographed.

Information for Underwater Photographers
  • The reason that I pioneered live-aboard diving in 1972 was that live-aboards were the perfect platform for underwater photographers. Not only were we able to get beyond the range of the main hotel-based diver traffic to remote, unspoiled reefs; we also could make as many dives each day as we wished (within, of course, the limits of good practice). That gave us better value for the time and money we were spending to come to the Tropics. In those glory days when our groups were the first to explore such places as Australia's Coral Sea, the Galapagos, Palau, Fiji, Truk Lagoon, and the Red Sea, live-aboard cruises were the secret to such remote exploration. Today, modern live-aboards offer far more in amenities than we had in the 1970's, but their premise is the same:
    • Take a week to as much as two weeks on board to really get in practice and in the best physical conditionthat's when you get the best pictures.
    • Go beyond the range of other divers in cruises of 200-900 miles to the very best sites, wherever they may be.
    • Have everything on board that serious photographers need to achieve their goal: shooting a lot of film on great subjects!
