As a volunteer to Ukraine, you can choose either to teach conversational English or to provide companionship and care to children at a rural orphanage. For those choosing to teach English, lessons will be conducted with university students in a conventional classroom setting, at one of several local universities. The emphasis is on improving real-life speaking skills and not on formal rules of grammar. Volunteers usually teach four hours a day, allowing equal time for preparation and team meetings. If you choose to provide child care, you will work with children ranging in age from 3 to 17 at the Matveevka Orphanage. The facility prides itself on providing not only a safe and stable environment for the children, but an education as well. Volunteers to the orphanage will spend a portion of their time in informal conversational English instruction; helping with pronunciation and vocabulary development. The emphasis is on interaction with the children and providing them with basic conversational phrases and not on formal rules of grammar. Strong doses of encouragement, love, and guidance from volunteers can make a real difference in these young lives. Previous volunteers have also played sports and games with the children and helped them with their other homework.

Hello! My name is Vicky. I'm from Ukraine , it's a country in Eastern Europe. I'm fond of cooking, I think I can call myself a gourmand, and one day I told myself "Vicky why don't you have a website, a sort of virtual kitchen and just tell everyone in the world about the recipes you like." So here you are. It's my virtual kitchen. Actually, at first it has been only an idea of gathering my favorite recipes, but I thought of more and decided to make a website about my country's national cuisine . Of course, here you can find my favorite recipes , too. And also, some info about me :-) and my country . And a bookstore , if you want more of Ukrainian recipes, or if you're just fond of cooking as much as I am, and are longing for a new cookery book. Phew, that was some speech! Now welcome to Vicky's Virtual Ukranian Kitchen, enjoy yourselves. Have a nice day!

There are many different ways to cook borshch. The Russian version is different from the Ukrainian one, and each family seems to have their own recipe for it. Some put meat in it, others don’t. Some use more veggies, others like it watery. The version I am about to teach you to make is medium thick, vegetable only. Borshch is originally a Ukrainian dish, adopted by the Russians, so much so that it is now known as a Russian soup as well (to the Ukrainians’ indignation). The veggie-only version I will tell you about is tasty, healthy, and amazingly filling, despite the fact that there is no meat in it. Attention beet-haters: this soup does not taste like beets. Honestly! Give it a try, and you will see for yourself. Cooking borshch may seem a little bit complicated, but it is really not that hard, especially when you have learned the process and know exactly what you are doing. You will need: A large pan (I usually use a 6 quarts one; it makes quite a lot of soup, but borshch keeps very well refrigerated)

Ancient Inventions of Ukraine
by
Andrew Gregorovich

The oldest house in the world is this 15,000 year old one made of mammoth bones found at Mezhirich near Kiev in Ukraine. It was probably covered with mammoth hides. It is planned to include this house in the Treasures of Ukraine Exhibit scheduled for the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto in 1996. The Ancient World created many of the inventions which have contributed to the progress of civilization. Among these are a number which originated in Ukraine. Some of these are noted in a new book Ancient Inventions , by Peter James and Nick Thorpe (New York: Ballantine Books, 1994). In this book review we would like to focus on these inventions which originated in Ukraine according to James and Torpe and include some additional items they missed. The first horseman rode a horse in Ukraine about 6,000 years ago. James and Thorpe explain it this way: "...the earliest hard evidence for the domestication of the horse dates back only to 4000 B.C. teeth of horses from the Copper age site of Dereivka, in southern Ukraine, examined under the microscope show traces of wear caused by having bits in their mouths. These were probably made of rope, as the earliest known metal horse bits date from about 1500 B.C." (p.51). Pants or trousers, were probably invented about 6,000 years ago by the horsemen on the Steppes of Ukraine. Pants were the typical dress of the Scythian warriors of ancient Scythia-Ukraine 2,600 years ago. Pants are particularly suited to a northern climate and to horsemen which places the logical origin on the steppes or prairies of Eastern Europe, or Ukraine. They are depicted on ancient gold jewelry and vases found in Ukrainian burial mounds (kurgans). Some ancient Greeks, such as Hippocrates, thought poorly of the pants worn by the Ukrainian Scythians. James and Thorpe mention pants were popular among many nations but do not suggest the possible location of the origin of them.
