    Power fight in Ukraine
Prime Minister Leonid Kuchma is fiercely opposed by Yulia Tymoshenko MOSCOW, Russia A former Ukrainian deputy prime minister facing corruption charges has announced her ambition to return to politics. Yulia Tymoshenko, who was sacked by President Leonid Kuchma, said she would accept any senior government position to carry out "key changes" including ending her nation's dependence on Russia. Relations between Russia and Ukraine have been strained recently over payments for gas supplies and a Russian call to place tariffs on imports of Ukrainian steel pipes - a key Ukrainian industry. Tymoshenko was sacked amid a scandal over Kuchma's alleged involvement in the murder of journalist Heorhiy Gongadze. Kuchma denies any part in the killing and despite repeated Ukrainian protest marches has refused to resign. Tymoshenko is currently recovering in hospital after a stay in remand prison ahead of a trial on corruption charges. The Supreme Court is to rule whether prosecutors can take her back to prison.

    Ukraine minister closes murder case
Kuchma has denied any involvement in Gongadze's disappearance KIEV, Ukraine Ukraine's interior minister says the investigation into the murder of a controversial journalist has been closed. Heorhiy Gongadze, an outspoken campaigner against official corruption, disappeared in September and a scandal erupted over allegations President Leonid Kuchma was involved. However, Interior Minister Yuriy Smirnov said on Tuesday that Gongadze was killed by two criminals, who have since died, and the crimes had nothing to do with politics. "As a minister, I consider the crime to be resolved. We have proof concerning the criminals, who have died, to our sorrow," said Smirnov, according to the Interfax news agency. "Knowing the situation in full, I can state that the crime has been resolved and that it has no political grounds. This is a purely criminal matter," Smirnov said. Some other people involved were already in prison he added.

Post-election Donetsk a place of profound contradictions
DONETSK - After visits to Ukraine over the last decade and a half, I finally have gotten to Donetsk, the heartland of the Yanukovych team forces in this winter’s Orange Revolution. And, once again, as is frequently the case in the former Soviet Union, I found a place of profound contradictions.
    New regime elates Ukraine students
Ukraine is beginning to waken from a cold and snowy winter, and the first warm days of spring find the capital also waking from the almost hallucinogenic high of the successful Orange Revolution that brought Viktor Yushchenko to the presidency.
    Getting it Right in Ukraine
Ukraine's third attemp at electing a president was successful, much to the joy of the almost 50 million citizens of this former Soviet country that wants to pull free from Russia's orbit and join the European Union. Welcome to Ukraine
U kraine is situated in the south-eastern part of Central Europe and has its own territory, government, national emblem, flag and anthem. It borders on Russia, Byelorussia, Moldova, Slovakia, Roumania, Hungary and Poland on land and Russia, Georgia, Bulgaria, Roumania and Turkey on sea. The territory of Ukraine is mostly a level, treeless plain, calls "steppe". There are the Crimean Mountains in the Crimean peninsula and the Carpathians in the west, but they are not very high. Mixed forests of pine and fir-trees, beeches, limes, oaks and elms cover the mountains, but the thickest woods can still be found in the northern part of the republic, in Volyn. Kiev and Cherkassy lie in the midst of Ukrainian southernmost pine forest. The main Ukrainian river is the Dnieper. It is one of the longest European rivers and one of the republic's main source of hydroelectric power. The Dnieper and its tributary the Ross had been the cradle of the Ukrainian and Russian people in time immemorial. The climate of the country is moderate. Winter is rather mild, with no severe frosts but with regular snowfalls everywhere except the south. The rivers and lakes freeze in winter. The average winter temperature varies -20 Centigrade in the north to -3-5 in the south. Summer is quite hot and dry, with occasional showers and thunderstorms. The fertile black soil is well watered in spring and autumn and gets plenty of sunshine in summer.

    Ukraine's Kuchma sacks security chiefs
President Kuchma's government was criticised by missing journalist KIEV, Ukraine Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma has sacked the head of his security service and the chief of the state bodyguard service. Kuchma made the decision at a meeting of his National Security and Defence Council on Saturday, Russia's Interfax news agency reported. The dismissals follow protests at the disappearance of outspoken journalist Heorhiy Gongadze who had been critical of the government and crusaded against corruption. Kuchma has replaced Leonid Derkach, State Security Service chief, and Volodymyr Shepel, the head of the State Guard Department, responsible for security of the president and government leaders. ALSO Knives are out for Kuchma Gongadze went missing in September 2000 in what many lawmakers and fellow journalists described as a political case. A beheaded body found near the capital, Kiev, last November is believed to be his.

Ukraine from 1988 to 1993: lawlessness and collapse
Classifying recent Ukrainian history From a socioeconomic standpoint recent Ukrainian history could probably best be divided up as follows: 1985 - 1988: perestroika begins
: years of lawlessness and collapse
    1993 - 1998: gradual stabilization
    1998 - 2004: slow recovery
From a political standpoint we would divide it up by presidential terms: 1985 - 1991: the Gorbachev era
    1991 - 1993: the Kravchuk years
    1994 - 1999: Kuchma's 1st term
    1999 - 2004: Kuchma's 2nd term
    2005 - ?: the Yuschenko era
Visitors to Ukraine today will hear legends about standing in lines for bread at 6 a.m. and paying for groceries with coupons that they received at work. During this period food shortages were common as the central planning system fell apart, disrupting production and logistics. This was also a time of galloping inflation and incredible demand for western currency. People today still recall as if it were not long ago the days when their monthly salary was the equivalent of three dollars. As a result, workers began taking home any goods they could get ahold of at work as government control weakened.
    Theft of government property
Admittedly, this practice had begun long before, but during these years petty theft as well as large-scale embezzlement of government property grew to absurd proportions. In parts of Ukraine there are still towns with uncovered manholes; the manhole covers (and any other metal) are still stolen immediately and sold as scrap metal. During the early 90s kids and adults alike would steal lightbulbs from lamps in apartment building stairwells and other public places.
