Ancient Inventions of Ukraine
by
Andrew Gregorovich

The oldest house in the world is this 15,000 year old one made of mammoth bones found at Mezhirich near Kiev in Ukraine. It was probably covered with mammoth hides. It is planned to include this house in the Treasures of Ukraine Exhibit scheduled for the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto in 1996. The Ancient World created many of the inventions which have contributed to the progress of civilization. Among these are a number which originated in Ukraine. Some of these are noted in a new book Ancient Inventions , by Peter James and Nick Thorpe (New York: Ballantine Books, 1994). In this book review we would like to focus on these inventions which originated in Ukraine according to James and Torpe and include some additional items they missed. The first horseman rode a horse in Ukraine about 6,000 years ago. James and Thorpe explain it this way: "...the earliest hard evidence for the domestication of the horse dates back only to 4000 B.C. teeth of horses from the Copper age site of Dereivka, in southern Ukraine, examined under the microscope show traces of wear caused by having bits in their mouths. These were probably made of rope, as the earliest known metal horse bits date from about 1500 B.C." (p.51). Pants or trousers, were probably invented about 6,000 years ago by the horsemen on the Steppes of Ukraine. Pants were the typical dress of the Scythian warriors of ancient Scythia-Ukraine 2,600 years ago. Pants are particularly suited to a northern climate and to horsemen which places the logical origin on the steppes or prairies of Eastern Europe, or Ukraine. They are depicted on ancient gold jewelry and vases found in Ukrainian burial mounds (kurgans). Some ancient Greeks, such as Hippocrates, thought poorly of the pants worn by the Ukrainian Scythians. James and Thorpe mention pants were popular among many nations but do not suggest the possible location of the origin of them.

http://ethnomed.org/ethnomed/voices/ukraine.html
VOICES OF THE UKRAINIAN COMMUNITY INTRODUCTION Demographic changes in the Seattle area are having a profound impact on the local health care delivery system. Health care providers need to hear from ethnic communities about their experience in trying to access health care. Offering culturally appropriate care requires being open to the perceptions, realities and expectations of a community that may be different from one's own. The Cross-Cultural Health Care Program (CCHCP) in Seattle, WA works with health care providers, interpreters and community-based organizations to address these needs. Established in 1992, the CCHCP is funded by a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. This "Voices of the Communities" profile is one of a series developed by the CCHCP. The profiles and an earlier survey of 22 underserved ethnic communities are part of the CCHCP's effort to provide a forum for underserved communities to interact with the health care community. These profiles were developed by and in consultation with members of the profiled community. UKRAINIAN DEMOGRAPHIC AND CULTURAL BACKGROUND History and economy Ukraine is the second largest country in Europe. It became independent in mid-1991, after the breakup of the Soviet Union. A highly developed industrial country, Ukraine has been experiencing a severe economic crisis since its independence. A continuing fuel shortage and poor harvests have led to widespread undernourishment. In addition, the country is still suffering the health effects and environmental contamination from the 1986 explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power station. Approximately 100,000 people were exposed to high levels of radiation before being evacuated.

Archival Ukrainica In Canada
The Ukrainian archival legacy has been grossly complicated by the fact that over the centuries Ukrainian lands have been subjected to a variety of political regimes, ruling from the most part from political centres outside Ukraine. Further complicating the archival legacy has been the existence of different - and usually rival - political regimes simultaneously holding or vying for power over traditional Ukrainian lands. These factors have resulted in a tremendous fragmentation of pertinent records and the fact that Ukrainian-pertinent records are invariably found outside the territory presently constituting Soviet Ukraine. The underlying political shifts, turmoil, and oppression that have characterized Ukrainian history have produced an unusually large-scale emigration of ethnic Ukrainians, and others who have been active in its political and cultural life, from traditional Ukrainian lands. Many emigrants fled empty handed, but others carried with them, or arranged to have transferred, vast quantities of archival materials of origin in or immediately pertinent to the political, economic, scientific and cultural life of the nation they left behind.

Following WWI and the collapse of tsarist authority in Ukrainian history, ukraine officially became part of the USSR in 1922 in Ukrainian history.

History of Ukrania in Ottoman Times
The first people to unify and control it for a long period were Scandinavians known as the Rus. The Rus took Kiev in 882 AD, and by the late 10th century the city was the center of a unified state known as Kievan Rus, which stretched from the Volga west to the Danube and south to the Baltic. In 988, the Kievan Rus leader Volodymyr accepted Christianity from Constantinople, beginning a long period of Byzantine influence over Ukrainian politics and culture in Ukrainian History. The Kievan Rus splintered into over a dozen rival princedoms in the 12th century, many of them falling under foreign domination in Ukrainian History. The Crimea became a vassal of the Constantinople-based Ottoman Turk Empire, which controlled all of coastal Ukraine by 1520 in Ukrainian History.
Military devastation and plague had wiped out much of the population of the Ukrainian steppe by the 15th century, when the region became popular with runaway serfs and Orthodox refugees escaping more tightly controlled neighboring domains in Ukrainian History. These people came to be known as kazaks (Cossacks), a Turkic word meaning outlaw, adventurer or freebooter. Ukrainian Cossacks eventually formed a state that, although officially under Polish and later Russian rule, was to a significant degree self-ruling in Ukrainian History. Despite destroying the Polish army in 1648, Ukraine's independence was short-lived, ending 20 years later when treaties between Poland and Russia divided the country between the two powers. Russia took even more of the country when it partitioned Poland in the late 18th century in Ukrainian History.

History of Jews of Polonnoye for Five Centuries
Our small city, with a history of ten centuries, has many interesting pages tightly connected with an easy life for the Jews - representatives of an old nation. Religion and culture, which cannot be separated from all human treasures, are the basis of Christianity and all other religions. During the years of the Fight for Freedom that the Ukrainian people had against the Polish-Shlyatsky oppressions, the Jewish and Polish population in the city was decreasing, many of these people ran away to different counties or were killed during the military actions. Right before consolidating the right side of the river of Ukraine with Russia there was only a few hundred Jews. At the end of the 17th century, in 1684, the small Jewish community received from Countess Lubomirskaya, who controlled the city, permission that allowed them "to build nice houses and buildings in the central part that was called 'Volia'". For a famous reward that went to the Christians, Jews freed themselves from military service except "General obligation in case of a war". They were granted the right to sell and also trade goods, with the condition that they pay the taxes, as were specified by the kingdom. This helped to increase the numbers of the Jewish population and developing with it, active participation of much needed businesses. Thanks to that, already at the beginning of the 18th century, the city became a large trade center on Volinsky land.
