Although part of Ukraine was annexed by Poland shortly afterwards, the whole of Ukraine was taken over by Russia after the partition of Poland at the end of the 18th century. When the empire of the Tsar collapsed in 1917, Bolshevik forces consolidated their control over Ukraine and the republic was incorporated into the Soviet Union. However, Ukraine became the scene for much of the key fighting during the civil war of the early-1920s and the Soviets subsequently lost some Ukrainian land to Czechoslovakia, Poland and Romania. Tysovsky, who adapted the universal Scout principles to the needs and interests of Ukrainian youth. Unlike other Scout organizations of the world Ukrainian Scouting UKRAJINSKY PLAST-came into being to fulfill specific national aims. Born in 1911, during the decade of great social and political upheavals in Europe, Ukrainian Scouting underwent great trials in the first half-century of its existence thus developing typical and unique features of its own. The first Scout troops were formed in the largest city of Western Ukraine, Lviv in 1911. The Movement spread rapidly to the other cities and towns and by 1913 the first Supreme Scout Council had been formed and the first textbook published. Shortly after its founding, the organization had to face the dreadful storms of World War I, which brought about the collapse of the two powers occupying the Ukrainian territory, the Austro-Hungaria monarchy and the Czarist Russia. The indomitable will of the Ukrainian people for national freedom clearly crystallized itself in the formation of the Ukrainian National Republic in 1918.

Armed resistance against Soviet authority continued as late as the 1950s. During times of relative liberalization-as under Nikita Khrushchev from 1955 to 1964 and during the time of “perestroika” under Mikhail Gorbachev-Ukrainian communists pursued nationalist objectives. The 1986 explosion at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant, located in the Ukrainian SSR, and the Soviet government’s initial efforts to conceal the extent of the catastrophe from its own people and the world, was a watershed for many Ukrainians in exposing the severe problems of the Soviet system. Ukraine became an independent state on August 24, 1991, and was a co-founder of the Commonwealth of Independent States following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, although it has not officially joined the organization.

version a b c d ... z Early History In ancient times a major part of present-day Ukraine was inhabited by the Scythians (see Scythia ), who were later displaced by the Sarmatians (see Sarmatia ). Early in the Christian era, a series of invaders (Goths, Huns, Avars) overran the Ukrainian steppes, and in the VII th century the Khazars included much of Ukraine in their empire. The Ukrainians themselves can be traced to Neolithic agricultural tribes in the Dnepr and Dnestr valleys. The Antes tribal federation (IV th -VII th centuries) represented the first definitely Slavic community in the area. In the 9th century, a Varangian dynasty from Scandinavia established itself at Kiev . Having freed the Slavs from Khazar domination, the Varangians united them in the powerful Kievskaya Rus Following Yaroslav 's reign (1019-1054), which marked the zenith of Kiev's power, Kievskaya Rus split into principalities, including the western duchies of Halych and Vladimir. These and the rest of the western region, which included Podolia, had separate histories after the conquest of Kievskaya Rus (XIII

Conference Description
Soviet Totalitarianism in Ukraine: History and Legacy
Background. The idea of holding a conference to examine the legacy of Soviet totalitarianism in Ukraine is something that the Krytyka Institute has been actively pursuing for close to two years now. At present, in conjunction with our Kyiv partner and co-sponsor, the State Archives Committee of Ukraine (Derzhavnyi Komitet Arxiviv; director: Hennadii Boriak) we have made preliminary plans, and received promises of support, for an international conference to be held in Kyiv, Ukraine, September 2-6, 2005. Offering their support and participation are the Ukrainian Research Institute, Harvard University (HURI) and the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies, also at Harvard. Conference Topic and Purpose. An examination of the Soviet past has not been a priority for the academic and scholarly establishments of today's Ukraine; they are, after all, the direct, and still largely unreformed, products and descendants of that system. Some western scholars have spoken of a virtual "amnesia project" in this regard. The recent, 2003, official commemoration in Ukraine of the 70th anniversary of the Great Famine of 1932-1933 was a case in point: the official position of the Kuchma government was to speak of the Famine as an intentional Stalinist crime, indeed to ask the UN to designate it as a genocide. At the same time, however, no official, institutional effort was ever launched to study the political and social contexts of that event, let alone of the system and the ideology that brought it about. (And no government official was present at the final national requiem that marked the conclusion of the commemoration.)

A collection of articles, links, reviews and a bibliography on the famine, and its recorded history.

The Artificial Famine/Genocide in Ukraine 1932-33
Introduction
A Man-Made Famine raged through Ukraine, the ethnic-Ukrainian region of northern Caucasus, and the lower Volga River region in 1932-33. This resulted in the death of between 7 to 10 million people, mainly Ukrainians. This was instigated by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and his henchman Lazar Kaganovich. The main goal of this artificial famine was to break the spirit of the Ukrainian farmer/peasant and to force them into collectivization. The famine was also used as an effective tool to break the renaissance of Ukrainian culture that was occuring under approval of the communist government in Ukraine. Moscow perceived this as a threat to a Russo-Centric Soviet rule and therefore acted to crush this cultural renaissance in a most brutal manner. These series of pages are intended to educate the general populace about this little known event in Ukrainian history. InfoUkes hopes to add to this series of pages over time. InfoUkes Webmaster

HISTORY OF UKRAINE

The Oldest Period of Ukrainian History
The first man (archanthropinae) appeared on Ukrainian territory about one million years ago during the Stone Age. Archanthropinae probably came from the western regions of Southern Asia and the Balkans. Soon to follow were Neanderthal men (about 135-150 thousand years ago), who were more mentally and physically developed and had family relations. Then about 35 thousand years ago, came Cro-Magnon, the first representative of Homo sapiens. During the Middle Stone Age the population increased considerably and people could not feed themselves by relying solely on hunting. Thus, they learned how to fish, gather berries and plants, and how to domesticate animals. During the Neolithic era, men learned how to cultivate land, rear cattle, and make pottery. The divergence in economic occupations of people in different regions of Ukraine became greatly appreciated during this time. More agricultural development, hunting and fishing and cultural and economic developments were on the rise at this time. Also during this time, a primitive communal system with a matriarchal social base was formed on Ukrainian terrain. During the Copper-Bronze age (the 4-3rd millennia BC) labor productivity grew and there were significant changes in the primitive society due to property stratification and changing ideology. The Tripillian culture, which quickly developed vast new territories, is distinguished as having been highly intelligent.

The State
Ukraine is located in Central - Eastern Europe. It occupies southwest part of Eastern European Plato and part of Carpathians and Crimean mountains. South borders of Ukraine are washed by Black and Azov seas.
The geopolitical location of Ukraine bordering west and east nations and cultures has significantly influenced the historical and present development of the state.
National Symbols of Ukraine: State Flag and Emblem National Symbols of Ukraine The State Flag of Ukraine Various types of flags were used in various periods of Ukrainian history. The earliest mention of the modern national colors of Ukraine dates back to the period of Hetman State and is found in the Lviv Chronicle of the 17th century. Supposedly, the coat of arms of the city of Lviv, in yellow and blue colors, was granted to the city by Prince Lev. Yellow and blue also appeared in the coat of arms of the "Ruthenian Voyevodstvo (Province)" which was part of Poland in the 14th and 15th centuries. The description of some military flags from the times of the Hetman State (after the Periaslav Council of 1654) mention azure as the color of the flag cloth bearing different embroidered emblems and mottoes. Along with azure, often in combination with yellow, the favorite colors of the Kozak state were crimson and red. The heraldic conception of national colors that had been passed down from ancient times had been lost. Instead, blue was justified as being the color of the sky and yellow as the color of the wheat fields. On March 22, 1918 the Ukrainian Central Rada simultaneously adopted the yellow-and-blue flag and the trident as the national coat of arms. On November 12, 1918, the government of the Western Ukrainian National Republic also adopted these colors for its state flag. In accordance with the resolution of the Ukrainian National Rada of June 27, 1949, the state flag of the Ukrainian National Republic consisted of two equal horizontal stripes: blue at the top and yellow at the bottom.
