Ukraine: East And West Different Histories, One Future
By Valentinas Mite

Ukraine's geography and history have played an important role in the country's current political crisis. Western parts of the country at times belonged to Poland, Austro-Hungary, and Czechoslovakia, while eastern and southern parts bowed to Moscow. Only after World War II did Ukraine attain its present borders as a republic within the Soviet Union. That history partly explains Ukraine's voting patterns, political sympathies, and outlook on the future. Still, analysts say that despite disputes over the recent presidential elections, Ukrainians have little choice but to get along together in one country. Prague, 21 December 2004 (RFE/RL) Ukraine's political turmoil has led to calls by some leaders in the pro-Russian east to seek wider autonomy from Kyiv. Recently, those calls have been toned down as the country gears up for repeat presidential elections on 26 December.

This remarkable achievement of the Ukrainian emigre scholarship embarrassed Soviet Ukraine into publishing its own much belated first encyclopaedia, Ukrains'ka radians'ka entsyklopediia. The earlier effort to produce a Soviet Ukrainian encyclopaedia in the 1930s had ended in failure. The multi - volume enterprise, headed by the prominent Ukrainian communist, Mykola Skrypnyk, fell victim to Stalin's terror. It was only in 1958 that the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR revived the encyclopaedia project. Between 1959 and 1965 seventeen volumes appeared. This was followed by a number of specialized encyclopaedias. However, because the Soviet encyclopaedia was politically and ideologically driven, it was not a model of objective scholarship. Its two main themes the brotherly unity of the Ukrainian and Russian people and its unrepressed hostility to "Ukrainian bourgeois nationalism" as well as much of the content abound with omissions and distortions.

Ukraine lies in eastern Europe on the western border of Russia. To the north is Belarus, with the Black Sea to the south and Poland to the west. Although slightly smaller than the state of Texas, Ukraine is the second largest country in Europe-far behind Russia but just ahead of France. Two-thirds of Ukraine's people live in urban areas. Kiev, the capital, lies in north-central Ukraine, on both sides of the Dnieper River. It is the largest and oldest city in the country. Although the Carpathian mountains rise in western Ukraine and the Crimeans in the south, most of the country is "steppe" fertile, rolling, lightly-wooded plain. Ukraine was known as "the breadbasket of the USSR, " and more than half its land is dedicated to growing crops. The hottest month for inland Ukraine is July, when the daily high averages 23°C (73°F). January, the coldest month, averages minus 3°C (26º ) in the southwest and minus 8°C (18º F) in the northeast. Inland Ukraine gets most of its rainfall in June and July. Yalta and Odessa, on the shores of the Black Sea, experience a more temperate climate. December and January are the wettest months on the coast.

Languages (Spoken) Of all the main languages in Ukraine there are a few that stand out the most. People mostly speak Ukrainian, Russian, Romanian, Polish, and Hungarian. There are a few other languages listed in Ukraine. There are about 11 listed languages, and of those, 10 are living spoken languages. 1 of those 11 languages is extinct (Gothic). Ukrainian language is considered the official langauge of the state. All documentation is held in English. But still many people in everyday life speak Russian. Ukrainian was prohibited during Soviet times, and Russian was encouraged. The same was with all the national languages of the 14 soviet republics. But people saved their own languages, and besides they are all bilingual now. For example, people can easily communicate with people from Tajikistan, because they speak Russian. Physical Description Mount Goveria and Hora Hoverla are located on the Carpathian Mountains. The Carpathian Mountain Range defines the country’s extreme western border. Smaller Crimean Mountains rise in the Crimean Peninsula in the South. The Dniester River flows through Ukraine and Moldova. It forms part of the border between Ukraine and Moldova. It rises in the Carpatian Mts. and flows generally SE through SW Ukraine. The Dniester formed the Romanian-Soviet border from 1918 to 1940, when the USSR regained Bessarabia. The Dnipro River flows through the middle of the country and divides the country. The Dnipro Lake is part of the river, located in the northern center of Ukraine.
