Geography
The population of Ukraine is about 50 million, which represents about 18% of the population of the former Soviet Union. Ukrainians make up about 73% of the total; ethnic Russians number about 22%. The industrial regions in the east and southeast are the most heavily populated, and the urban population makes up about 70% of the population. Ukrainian and Russian are the principal languages, but about 88% of the population consider Ukrainian their native language. The dominant religions are the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, much of which retains its links to the Russian Orthodox Church, and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Kiev Patriarchate) is independent of Moscow. A defining feature of Ukraine’s national structure is the existence of a regional divide. Soviet era propaganda had labeled western Ukrainians [ and the Ukrainian diaspora] collectively as "bourgeois nationalists" and "fascist collaborators." The opposition's failure to acknowledge the results of the second round of the presidential elections in November 2004 resulted in the country's disintegration. Such disintegration divided the country into two parts along the river Dnieper, the historically well-known border.

hosted by the
Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies
This site is under construction. Once completed, the Internet Encyclopedia of Ukraine (IEU) will be the most comprehensive source of information in English on Ukraine, its history, people, geography, society, economy, and cultural heritage. At present, the IEU team is working on phase 1 of the project: the creation of an Internet database containing the revised and updated contents of the five-volume Encyclopedia of Ukraine (University of Toronto Press, 1984-93) edited by Volodymyr Kubijovyc (vols. 1-2) and Danylo Husar Struk (vols. 3-5). Only eight percent of this information is currently displayed on our site. New entries are being edited, updated, and added daily. Our ability to update this information and the speed with which we can make it available to Internet users worldwide will greatly depend on the availability of financial resources for our project. You can greatly contribute to the success of the Internet Encyclopedia of Ukraine by supporting our work morally and financially.

An Introduction to Ukraine and Ukrainian Local Government Geography (by regions) Transcarpathia (Zakarpattya) This region lies o n the western side of the Carpathian mountains , close to Hungary and Slovakia. It is screened from the northern and eastern winds by the mountains, and warm winters allow the growth of grapes and the production of wines. Carpathian Mountains These are located in w estern Ukraine and resemble the Alps. There is some skiing here, but the tourist potential is largely untapped. Western Ukraine (including Carpathians) In general this area is hilly and highly forested, and there is a serious lack of land for agricultural use. Traditionally, the area has a high level of unemployment. This territory did not become part of the Soviet Union until 1939 (it was part of Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Romania in the prewar period), and therefore people there have a living memory of local government. Many Westerners of Ukrainian ancestry trace their roots to this region. Polissya This sandy region has many forests and marshes but is poor in mineral resources. The main agricultural products are potatoes, flax, and barley. The Chernobyl nuclear plant is in this region, and an area of 20 miles around the plant is so polluted with radioactive materials that no one lives or farms there.

It's slightly larger than France. Ukraine is mainly a vast plain with no natural boundaries except the Carpathian Mountains in the southwest and the Black Sea in the south. The Dnipro River with its many tributaries unifies central Ukraine economically, connecting the Baltic coast countries with the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. The mouth of the Danube River provides an outlet for Ukrainian trade with the Balkans, Austria, and Germany. Ukraine has a complex geology with a rich variety of scenery and impressive contrasts in topography. Central and southern Ukraine is primarily steppe (prairie), with fertile black soil exceptionally well-suited for grain farming. In the east is the industrial heartland containing large reserves of mineral deposits known as the Greater Donbas or Donetsk Basin.
